Is my i7700k @ 4.5GHz worth upgrading?

Hello all,

I'm running an i7700k on a Gigabyte z270X Gaming 7 at 4.5GHz.

For me, due to playing DCS World, the fastest single core speed is more important than number of cores/threads. Is there a worthwhile upgrade available now that'll give a fair bump in performance? Or something coming soon?

I'm a little out of the loop on recent CPU developments so your help will be much appreciated. Thank you!

Short answer no, my advice would be to increase your overclock if you are looking for more performance I understand you should be able to hit 4.8 - 5.0 relatively easily.

I agree, give the 7700 a tickle & you should see 4.8ghz quite easily.
If single core speed is the main aim you could even set the overclock just for one core & leave the others untouched.

Depending on temps, 5ghz is possible, is the chip delidded? If not its certianly worth looking into, most people get a good 15c drop in load temps which in turn allows you to bump the voltages up.

I would be careful with the overclock but 4.8-4.9Ghz could happen with the 7700k. Depends on the cooler you have. Overclocking on an old PC can kill it so be careful. Make sure you have a good motherboard, PSU and cooling.

Chances for different speeds.
7700K 4.80GHz 4.60GHz 1.400V 100%
7700K 4.90GHz 4.70GHz 1.412V Top 96%
7700K 5.00GHz 4.80GHz 1.425V Top 78%
7700K 5.10GHz 4.90GHz 1.437V Top 36%
7700K 5.20GHz 5.00GHz 1.450V Top 12%
7700K 5.30GHz 5.10GHz 1.450V Top 1%

Thanks for all the replies! :)

I've taken on board the suggestion to overclock and wondered how to go about it as it's been a while since I did any overclocking - back on a 3570k actually! So I looked around the BIOS and found an option called 'CPU Upgrade' set to AUTO. I selected '4.8Ghz' instead and now the CPU seems to be happily running at that speed. Nice and easy at just 1 click! Hopefully that's a satisfactory way to achieve it, instead of manually tweaking.

I'll give it a bit of a test with The Division 2 later and monitor temps (although I'm not sure that game needs tons of CPU) but anyway nothing has caught fire so far. Thanks all!

i have swapped my 7700K out for a 9900kf as the 7700k needed too much voltage for 5ghz.

i would look at the 8086k as you will get a binned chip with a least two cores at 5ghz running at around 1.2v at stock without any OC.

Make sure to check the voltages and temperatures as auto overclock sometimes puts more volts than necessary resulting in too much heat.

I had my 7700K running at 4.8Ghz 1.200v before I sold it and got a 3800X. I was also able to run it 5.0Ghz at around 1.240-50v but didnt find it worth it since the difference in performance at 5.0Ghz is not noticeable vs the increased temps (I never tried checking how far I was able to push the clock). It was delidded as well. I personally wanted to go for more cores.
