As uninformed as my phrasing was, I still think that equation is the best description of the area.

Why? I mean why the x instead of 16????

You've contradicted yourself a bit there - if you can assert that the area of the top rectangle (assuming it is a rectangle) is 16 * 4 then you're assuming right angles(or a parallelogram)... ergo the "x" is 16.
