Hi All,

I bought this PC some time ago from OC and now would like to move in the video editing direction... I won't be editing anything demanding, just 1080p gopro footage of my family as it grows over time. Ideally and if possible for the budget, I would maybe like to record and edit in 4K... My existing build is as follows and was purchased as a package.

I must add, I have never built a PC before but am very capable at disassembling / reassembling and navigating around a computer. I see editing BIOS etc a lot and while not having done this before, I am keen to learn but would just need to find a tutorial etc.

My budget is around £600 - £700 and if I can keep stuff that I already have that would be a bonus of course. I don't need a screen, keyboard or mouse as have those already.

Happy to stick with AMD as I have heard good things, but not adversed to switching to Intel as long as it works and does what I want, I'm happy!

One other thing is that I really want to buy some half decent stuff so that it is easily upgradable without spending a small fortune because newer parts aren't compatible with the other bits, if that makes sense...

Which software will you be using to edit?

That's the next question! My wife is a photographer and pays a subscription to Adobe for Lightroom and Photoshop (Mac). I believe that with that subscription she/ I am able to make use of one of the Adobe video editing softwares, although not sure which one. Essentially I want to be able to make use of a high end editing suite.

Thanks

I am also a photographer. Your wife probably has the "Creative cloud" subscription which includes Lightroom & Photoshop on 2 computers for about £10pm. Unfortunately, neither are suitable for video editing. For high end video editing, you could consider Adobe Premier Pro (which I use). As it is not part of the Creative Cloud suite, you will either need to take out a separate subscription just for Premier Pro (I think about £16pm), or upgrade your wife's Creative Cloud subscription to the "all apps" subscription which is about £49pm & will also give you Adobe After Effects plus just about everything Adobe have.

You could otherwise look at Adobe Premier Elements which I think is about £80 or so one-off. You should note that 4k editing with pro software does require a high spec pc, particularly if you start editing video from a larger sensor or/& a higher codec.

Yes she has the Creative Cloud, shame about the video editing but thanks for the headstart on the Adobe Elements. I will probably go for it in that case.

Premier Elements. OK. Keep the kit you have for the time being, although sometimes the latest versions may require Windows 10.

The computer at the moment is just too slow. I have edited video about a year ago with GoPro's own software and it is totally useless. The video judders and unwatchable while editing. I just don't want to pay for some software then to find out the computer cannot handle it.

Edit:

I should add that Windows 7 was upgraded to Windows 10 when it came out

Can you look at your budget? It's a bit low for video editing. The problem is that an 8 year old 4 core processor is not really going to cut it. So really, you need to replace everything.

Here's the sort of costs for 4k video editing.

Motherboard £200-£350
Processor £400-£550
RAM for 4k editing is 64gb - about £300
Video card - say an RTX 2060 - about £430
Use your current storage & case
You didn't list your PSU

Really, you'd want a £2k budget. Scrape in at £1.5k. Cut to bare minimum £1.2k.
