2700X ->5600X a worthwhile upgrade?

Since getting my 3080 I'm CPU bound, primarily on single threaded speed, by my 2700X. The 5600X would sort that out nicely, and still end up being an overall upgrade even on max threaded workloads.....BUT it feels like a sidegrade since I'm losing two cores/4 threads.

Has anyone made this particular jump? I think it would be fit for purpose, but I also feel like it'd bug me losing the cores (but for £130 maybe that is just pointless egotism?).

What say you, my peers?

Why not make the proper jump then to 5800x :p

At this point, and given you're on a 3080 at 1080p(?), an upgrade is warranted regardless. I know hardwareunboxed revisited the 2700x this month and it didn't look great.

At 4K you'll have no benefit but 1440p will and definitely 1080p, that said I wouldn't want to go from an 8 core to 6 and the 5600X will need replacing again much sooner than a 5800X or 5900X.

slightly awkward spot because you want to buy a gpu / cpu combo that marry quite well without having to make these choices or changes.

of course it doesnt always work out that way because of release timings and even worse now shortages etc.

i would hold off maybe since i dont think you would notice much difference in real world use with that many games.

im sorta in a spot now where i have an i5-8600K so the same would happen to me if i buy a 3080.

i have to get a 3060 Ti or 3070 so not to bottleneck all the time

Cores are faster enough to beat also multithreaded performance competition.
In fact already Zen2 3600X would be close to multithreaded performance of 2700X.

But for future 6 core is entry level.
Price of Zen3s might decrease later this year when refreshed modesl with 3D stacked extra L3 cache are coming.

Yeah I think I'll hold off and then I'll have cash in the bank (I put 100 aside each month as my pc fund or it'd get spent on bills) so then I might splurge

This should give you an idea of what you'll gain, doesnt have your exact rez but does show 3440x1440P, since your on 3600x1600 the gap should be even smaller and bear in mind this is with a 3090 which is also a bit faster than a 3080 so with a 3080 the gap would also reduce a tiny bit.

Not like for like but.... I went from a 2600 @ 4.1GHz to a 5600x with a 3080 at 3440x1440 and 4k, 5600x is a hundred times better for min fps and overall far smoother.

People say don't drop the core count but look at it this way, even the 3700x isn't fully letting a 3080 stretch its legs now where as a 5600x is..... so fast forward when a 5600x struggles, a 5800x will also struggle.

Thanks gents. I think that as much as I'd probably be fine with a 5600x, I'll hang on a bit longer, see what happens to prices later down the line and whether that 5800X becomes palatable. I don't know what a 2700X goes for these days though, so potentially I risk losing whatever I save by then as well. Maybe I just scratch the itch now.

It's really on frametimes and mins that the 2700X is killing me, and I hate seeing my 3080 never at 100% usage as well.
