Windows 11 VBS tanks gaming performance?

It's a new security feature which is going to be mandated on prebuilt systems from Dell,etc. Apparently,if you do you own build you can disable it. When enabled GPU power draw drops a noticeable amount and so does performance.

It was reported a few months ago that high end PC's were banned for sale in one of the US states, so now they're just going to gimp them all via software instead?

It's actually a Windows 10 feature too and I already knew that it destroys gaming performance. I am disappointed that Microsoft did not improve its performance in Windows 11 given their focus on both gaming and security in this OS version. I wondered whether that was why they restricted compatibility to such modern CPUs (VBS is supposed have a smaller performance hit on modern CPUs), but it seems like it's not and that remains a mystery.

I imagine in some cases it's not allowing the CPU to go into power saving modes/downclock because the feature puts a constant load on the CPU. This is exposing poor game programming rather than being a benefit of VBS (it only happens in a couple of the games tested, minimums are much lower in the others). This is just my hypothesis though.

one can make an argument that if min fps is higher then you have a better gaming experience with vbs in such games.

Won't be touching Windows 11 until it's first service pack or two have hit it and all the known bugs have been mostly ironed out.

Ended up installing it a week ago and Ive not ran into any problems but only really played Death loop and HLA. Had a weird glitch with ICUE where it removed my fan profile but it was painless updating to it and I would go so far as to say I like it so far.

I installed it to have a play, but there are some slight regressions in performance in a few things.

I will wait until they are ironed out before I make the switch permanently.

I did enjoy the look and feel of Windows 11, so as soon as the performance catches up to Windows 10 I'll move straight over with no hesitation.

When upgrading over Windows 10 I believe this feature is already switched off.

Even a clean install via USB stick has VBS disabled I believe.

It's a simple setting in the GUI to turn it off, at least on my machine running Windows 11.

I've been there done that before with being an early adopter of windows.

A lot of people ran xp for instance even after many newer windows versions were released after as it was still king for a long while in terms of overall package.

I want a 100% stable and proven platform and anyone using a new windows version before the first major service pack or two has been released is simply a beta tester.

Also what benefits do you gain with windows 11 that a normal user would benefit from?

I'm normally the first person to upgrade firmware, bios, etc. But I have learned over many many years that it's best to wait for things to settle down and adopt a much more stable platform.

Have you tried turning off secure boot? I heard secure boot can lower performance- but it may become harder to not use in the future, for example it will become mandatory having it on to play Valorant and other online games may use things like secure boot as a security feature against hacks.

As much as people will complain about W11 system requirements, game developers can take advantage of the new security features to make it much harder to inject hacks into online games and fewer hackers is a good thing by me. But unfortunately security isn't usually free and it can hit performance
