I really could use some advice. I impulse bought the 9800x3d and not sure if I should do the upgrade from my 14900k. The 14900k is great with my 4090 but in vr I was hoping that the 9800x3d would just push the framerates a little more. I mainly play vr and shooters. I'm thinking of just returning the cpu and sticking with the 14900k. Decisions decisions

I can't see the point really, even less so if you do any desktop work on your PC.
Although no one will really know for sure until the 5090 is out just how much of an improvement you will see at higher resolutions.
Seems like a side grade at the current time though and a downgrade for productivity.

If you want to keep it, keep it. It'll cost you money, but you have a 14900K and a 4090, so I'd assume you're not that bothered.

I was thinking the same in terms of having a platform to upgrade on for a couple more years, but if you game at 1440p/4K it seems it's a great switch if you play specific racing/flight sims mainly than anything else.
But in terms of maximising every single % possible across as many titles as possible, why not if you already own one and the PC is specifically for gaming above everything else.

Min framerates in VR would be worth investigating as they can be jarring. I haven't see a VR review comparing the two though.
It is a few percent for the most part, but the X3D CPUs have two defining characteristics: they vary game-by-game and they push up frame consistency/averages.
If you hit a game that loves the cache and/or has a CPU bottleneck you can get much higher numbers (TPU's BG3 results are a good example of that, where even at 1440p the 9800X3D is 25% faster and in HUB's 1080p results, Assetto Corsa is 61% faster).
Is it an upgrade I'd recommend? No, because I still consider these CPUs within the same generation and there's a potential you'll see next to no benefit, but could you get a decent increase in some games? Yes. With VR specifically, I don't know.

I had the 14900k. It a fast chip. And it was good withe 4090. But personally I thought the temps and power draw was insane. Sure you can use fast ram with it and it is a formidable combo.
What irked me about it though was it was a very very marginal uplift over the 13900k another chips with insane temps and power draw but it even managed to top that.
It not like going from a 3090ti to a 4090 where even though it can use just as much power there is a very noticeable performance boost.
I have been mucking about with the 7800x3D a lot this past week and I much prefer it over my 13900k and 14900k.
I kept the 12900k though although it not as fast as the 13900k or 14900k and more of a mid tier chip these days. But I though that chip was great.

I've had no issues with my 14900k as far as temps. I'm really only concerned about how it compares to the 9800x3d in gaming performance. Do you feel like your 7800x3d outperforms the 14900k in gaming? I also heard that the amd cpu's can be laggy in windows as far as mouse input. Also have heard about the amd dip in some games.

I have a 9800x3D on order. So just waiting for it to turn up. And I have only been mucking about with the 7800x3D for about a week or so. So the first thing i noticed straight off the bat was in comparison to the 13900l/14900k is how cool it runs.
The general consensus is that is a hot running chip compared to other AMD cpu's and that may be the case, but it is cooler than the 13900k/14900k. I also found the temps to be more consistent when running games. Like if it runs the game and the cpu is like 60c or whatever then most of the time it will stay around that level.
When I was running the 14900k in the same game it would be like 65c then shoot up to 75c then 80 then back down to 55 or whatever. It was all over the place and I didn't like that even though it was well within the temp limit. Like I said I only been using it for a very very short while and the second thing I noticed was that my 4090 performed better, or should I say rather it seemed my 4090 was faster even though the 14900k has a higher clock speed.
Do I feel it outperforms the 14900k? Yes would be my answer, In terms of power draw, temps and how much the 7800x3D cost at launch to the 14900k cost at launch. Had intel managed to make a bigger impact with APO and the 14900k not sitting well with me as it felt just a more power hungry and hotter running cpu than the 13900k I had. I mean there was a jump in performance from teh 12900k to the 13900k but I never felt there was any benefit from switching from the 13900k to the 14900k. That's just me personally.
As far as mouse lag in Windows. I mean I did a fresh install of windows on a brand new Nvme drive and have never experienced the the mouse lag. I vaguely remember reading about it on Reddit or maybe here. But I have yet to encounter it in this past week or so. Maybe it was a windows bug.
I am not gonna lie to you. I wish instead of getting the 13900k/14900k I wish I made the switch earlier to the 7800x3D instead of like 2 years after it release. And even though I have the 9800x3D on its way, I think some of the shine of it will be diminished as I have been enjoying the 7800X3D a lot.
I am not trying to convince people if they have a 13900k or 14900k that they should make the switch, that is not my intention, it just for me I like the cooler temps and lower power draw while being very good at gaming. There will be certain games where the 14900k will always be faster than the 7800x3D but it not going to be too far off.
I only play games and benchmark. I don't do any sort of productivity. So it is possible that the 13900k/14900k still may be legitimate for each individual usecase. I hate to think if I had to video edit or something like that using a 13900k/14900k under full load ramping up the fans. I rather take something like this and wait longer.

I haven't read the other replies, so forgive me if I am saying things that have already been said.
I think it's really easy to get caught up in the hype from the reviewers, when, reality is, they are answering a different question to the one you are asking. They aren't saying whether it is worth upgrading, they measure it's absolute performance, but it won't help a jot if the CPU is NOT the bottleneck in your system.
There are the first signs of some videos on youtube that highlight this - that perhaps the reviewers are getting a little carried away, because their message is being interpreted incorrectly by the enthusiasts, and they are driving "unnecessary sales".
With a 14900K, my guess is that the £1000 it's going to cost you to move to a 9800X3D would be better spent on 5090 (adding the money you get from selling the 4090, of course).
