Worth the effort of an upgrade?

The only thing im stuck on is a decent M.2 main OS drive to choose now - I don't need Gen 5 really, and ill tansfer over most my old ones over (2x m.2 older drives dont even know the gen) and 2x 2.5 SSD's ....
I'd just pick whatever higher-end PCI-E 4.0 drive has the best price.

E.g.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £851.81 (includes delivery: £7.99)

There's some noise that Phison E18 drives are having issues (especially on earlier firmware), but I don't know if that's a thing. If so, the Kingston, Kioxia and Crucial all use Phison controllers.

Thanks thats genuinly super helpful! Really appreciate the advice.

I do have the following drives which i can obviously re-use:

MZVKW512HMJP-00000 512GB - 512GB
MZVLB1T0HBLR - 1TB

I think they are both gen3 drives - not 100% sure.

From a google of the model numbers, yep.

Sure, no reason not to. Both of those boards have enough spare M.2 slots.
What about something like a:

Corsair MP600 ELITE 1TB M.2 PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe SSD – M.2 2280 - Can be had quite cheap at the moment on the rainforest

I don't follow Corsair drives (too many models), but it looks like it is a Phison controller with TLC flash, but no DRAM, so a step down on the models above. I'd expect it to be alright.

crucial drives are very good and always on offer a decent 1tb model is often around £50-60

gone for one on my upgrade as the windows drive and sticking my gen3 drives in the other slots

Just wanted to say thanks for the all the help on this thread.

Ive now managed to upgrade from the 9900k to a 12700k build which ive finished, installed, updated and benched at stock with some pretty good results temperature wise.

Chuffed with the case and the downsize, so thats big positive! Will try and get some pics up if i can remember how to host the images!

I'm now on the hunt for an upgrade for the 2080, but thats going to be a "wait" for the right deal opportunity I think.

I want to give the CPU a bit of an overclock, but having never done it on my own before im not really sure where's best to start, I know the board can AI overclock but when trying it originally it tried to output some mad numbers (5.4 on the P cores and 4 on the E cores ....)

Id be happy with a 5.1 / 3.8 split with a lower voltage - but not sure on the best approach or where to start as its been years since ive properly done any of that!

I wouldn't recommend it, to be honest. These latest CPUs are pushed pretty hard out of the box. Undervolting and power limiting to get more efficiency is what most work on now.

Yeah ive been reading up a little in my spare time, and that was the general consensus I came to as well, but thought i might be able to squish a small OC out of it.

@ stock I was getting idle temps of 27 yesterday, and after 20 mins of Cinebench (multithread) hitting 68 - So there is definitely a little room for something!

As promised an image of the build.

Overtime I want to replace the non RGB 140 fans at the bottom for some Corsair ones, and the same for the 2x 120 top ones - annoyingly ive lost the white rings, otherwise id have them all white! But other than that Im quite happy with the decision to complete the small upgrade.

Already managed to shift the old 9900k and the motherboard and ram, so its not actually cost me a penny after that!

not a good upgrade normally, but if the cpu and mobo are free then go for it. make sure you are not losing any features from the mobo though. sometimes you can have an older top of the line mobo and then you move up to a newer midrange mobo and you lose features.

The upgrade served a double purpose really.

It allowed me to downsize my case. The 750D was way too big and its initial reason for the space was I had a lot of Mechanical HDD's which have since been moved over to a NAS. And it scratched the upgrade itch id had for a while and let me have another go a a rebuild, something ive not done for a long while

Secondly the 12700k and Z790 Dark Hero motherboard were free - so the cost to upgrade was negligible overall!

Genuinely happy with the outcome all things considered.

Didnt cost me a lot really (B grade case was a steal £60), and the RAM I got was a good price too! - all paid for by selling off the old parts, with some change left over.

RAM needs to be moved backed on the pic above. Should be in slots with a space between them normally starting with the right hand slot filled in). Currently the RAM is not running to its full potential.

Nice spot there also I'm not sure but the gpu has no real weight on it atm as its upright on the table but it may be me but it looks like it needs a support bracket as it looks like its sagging a little on the end.

When checking the motherboard manual I'm sure it said to run in those slots, but just double checking it appears you are right!

Excellent spot - Thank you! Not made a school boy error like that in a LONG time.

is the rad and rad fans correct? ... personally i would have put the rad up top with fans flowing out. then have the front and side intakeing. or remove one set at the front or side completely
