Internet and toxic people

Very true. Even walking into your local boulangerie everyone says "m'sieur" or "madame" or just simply "Bonjour" as they walk in. They still use the formal "vous" form. In offices hiérarchie is still significant, kinda bureaucratic at times but also polite and systematic in a good way. It can be very alien though.
The local shops and agencies is where you want to be unfailingly polite as word will get around real fast if the locals think you’re rude.

oui, when I was working in Paris the people in the office would all say Bonjour to everyone as they got in the lift. It was a refreshing change from the UK.
Paris is famous for rude restaurant and shop staff, but that’s because they’ve dealt with 20 Americans already that day and are already regretting their employment choices by lunch time.

Waiting to be seated and accompanying your “Bonjour” with a smile will see you right.

You know bretons live in "Bretagne" in French, and your country is "Grande-Bretagne" in french...
But that is not an excuse for you to try to invade our "Bretagne"
Breton are dangerous alcoolics they will kick your ass
In fact, Bretons pretend that "Bretagne" is not part of France. But they are maybe the best sailors of the world...

An aunt of mine owned a house in Brittany. She said that when you drove out of the area and reached the border with Normandy there was a sign announcing "You are now entering France".

I think the responses to this thread are pretty good candidates for what OP is talking about, amirite OP?

Your English is good. I was joking around with you earlier in this thread by the way, posting lyrics from the Britney Spears song Toxic. It was supposed to confuse and be funny but often things I think will be funny turn out to just be cringe. Love u Frenchy x

I once stayed with a French bloke in Clermont Ferrand for three months.
He learnt all his English from English/American music artists.
When I was there I could only talk to him in French, I wasn't too bad in 1979.
