How much is your water bill?

Welsh water are not listening to me

phones up, pays £50 off the bill

said i would pay the other £50 end of this month, asked if i could reduce the DD from £40 per month to £25, they said yes this is fine, this will cover the usage

had a new bill today, DD has been incresed from £40 to £75 per month

So the direct debit went from £19 per month, to £40 per month, to £75 per month in the space of a few days

Bloody useless company

Ill be getting back on the phone to them in a bit!

Ours has gone up hugely.
£52/month last year. Now £74/month. Anglian water. We now have a smart meter so you can see how much you are using via and app. Household has decreased in occupancy from 4 to 2 but I suspect they'll find a way of keeping the charges high. We seem to be averaging 180 litres a day for 2 people, wfh.

When you say ours, i assume you have more than one person living at the house?

Edit: ahh for 2

cracks me up when you phone this place there is an audio voice reading a load of rubbish, they say the average person uses around 340pints of water per day

no i bloody dont

they only say that only a small percentage of water we drink can come from reservoirs,

really???

£85 a month, didn't think much off it until we learnt we are among the highest users in our area, despite thinking we weren't using very much

Check your washing machine! we had ours on the wrong setting, the eco mode saves you no end although it takes longer

The website has a bar chart so try and work out what's different on the higher days

This time last year I was paying £60.22. Now I'm paying £123.95. Absolutely ridiculous.

Nothing in our domestic situation has changed. Family of 4.

Had my first bill... £250 for 6 weeks... Definitely not right as the meter reading from the 'start' of the 6 weeks is listed as an estimate, but the end is an actual reading that someone took.

Tempted to challenge it straight away but not had a bill in about 3 years so basically had free water all that time..

Think I'll just wait for the next one to arrive then compare, as it will be a lot more accurate, then tell them first one was wrong.
To update, did exactly this. Ignored their calls and letters saying to pay the £250, payment plan, will default blah blah blah yea whatever. Got bill for the last 6 months... £290. Much better than £250 for 45 days!

Called them up this morning, told them to recalculate as they now have 2 actual real reading, that £250 turned into ~£75. Now need to wait for the correct bill to pay it off.

The fact I had to do this, when many others probably wouldn't, shows how scummy Thames Water are. Still saved about £1.5k over 3 years when no bills came so meh.

Had a letter through the door the other day. Severn trent are going to be doing some work and if the water is cloudy afterwards please run the water for 20-30 minutes to clear it.

Ffs yes right i dont think so unless they pay for the extra water used

Yes they seem to do this regularly here. And no, I'm not running the ******** water for 30 minutes!

There's a form to fill in on their website to reclaim costs (if you're on a meter) for water used flushing as a result of their work

Update on my adjustments.

We have consumed the same appox 0.5 units/day since 2023 at least.

Measured over the last 8 days* following the cistern flush valve replacement for a non-leaking, more configurable one (that is configured to use less water for half flush than the old), and switching the pond to clean filters half as often with less pressure. The result: 0.32 units/day on average. As a result the last water bill would be cut by 44% approximately. Thames water can go eat my socks.

* - that 8 days consisted of normal showers, an extra dishwasher clean (for cleaning the washer itself), an extra wash load (on aqua plus which uses more water) for some really dirty overalls etc.

The cistern now has:
* https://www.screwfix.com/p/fluidmaster-bottom-entry-brass-shank-fill-valve-1-2-/47792
* https://www.screwfix.com/p/fluidmaster-820074-dual-flush-valve/601gf

The nice thing with that particular flush valve is how configurable it is, also how you can clean it (it comes apart without needing to disassemble the toilet). I've included the bit in case anyone's interested in doing the same. For us, the saving in theory should pay for the flush valve replacement in about 20 days.

Update on this. I've been keeping tabs on this every few weeks but I've decided (now the replacement is over a month old) to calculate the monthly consumption.

The last 32 days saw an average of 0.169 units/day. That would be a ~66% reduction in the water bill!
