They responded to this on Steam. There isn't going to be a fix. They designed it that way because they want people to play it multiplayer. They said they aren't going to change it.

We've been working hard to fix some issues that have been reported during the launch week. While some issues still remain, rest assured we're working on those too!
Please update your game to the latest version for uninterrupted multiplayer.
We're grateful for your patience as we continue to improve the game. We will be sharing more information about design changes related to hirelings very soon!
- Fixed a bug where cards could sometimes get scrapped unintentionally in VR
- Improved server stability to prevent random disconnects
- Fixed a bug that would cause performance to deteriorate during long play sessions
- Fixed a bug that could cause players to lose progression
- Fixed a bug where Achievements would sometimes not unlock dice correctly
- Added confirmations for 'Retreat to map' and 'Quit Game' buttons
- Changed the UI for 'Send Bug Report' button to make it clearer
- Changed the UI for loading of saved games:
- Changed the 'Load Game' button to 'Continue', which opens up a list of saved games
- 'Continue' is now listed as the first option for better visibility

Note that they ARE looking about hireling design changes.![]()
