Optical, 3.5mm or as you said and what I suspected headphones then just a bluetooth adapter? All available for under £20.
Re buying a soundbar, whilst I do agree I would honestly go the facebook marketplace route, some heavy duty double sided tape/velcro and just the tape the soundbar either to the monitor but most likely due to thickness to the wall above or below.
Definitely some bargains to be had second hand in that regard, I bought some Monitor Audio BR2's and a Lepy Mini AMP for around £60-70 a couple of years back for a friends TV audio upgrade. Connected via the 3.5mm, demolishes pretty much any soundbar I've heard shy of £400-500 + and that's factoring in that they offer multi-channel rather than raw audio quality.
Of course you need not go that far, a young lad probably isn't too fussed so £20-30 would probably be spot on as you say.
