Hi I know RAM prices are insane right now but hopefully next year they will settle down? I was thinking of getting 32GB of RAM but which processor is the next best upgrade for me?

I have a mortar motherboard MSI socket b550m AFAIK

Did something similar with a MSI 550 board last month - basically your choices are limited for new cpus (5950X is/was at decent prices) and decent DDR4-3200 16GB x 2 kits are pushing £200 where there's actually stock to ship.

Forget about any X3D cpus unless you buy second-hand.

DDR4 memory prices aren't going to "settle down" as there's very limited production now and there will be even less next year.

so this CPU will fit my mobo?

AMD Ryzen 9 5950X Processor (16Cores/32Threads, 105W TDP, Socket AM4, 72MB Cache, Up to 4.9 GHz Max Boost, no cooler)

the graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 12GB - is that a good one?
Would be considered a 1080p card, at this point. 4K will work with older games.

Personally, I would not upgrade the CPU with that card, unless you play games that are very heavy on the CPU and/or benefit from the X3D's cache.

I didnt understand why?

R u saying my specs are good enough?

Yeah, a Ryzen 3600 would get most of the performance from a RTX 3060.

It does depend on the game, so if your game(s) are very CPU heavy or love the X3D (like world of warcraft) then it might be worth it.

Otherwise, I'd say don't bother until you upgrade the graphics card.

I certainly wouldn't be looking into buying a 5950X for gaming as seems to have been considered earlier in this thread, it'll offer a lot of cost but no actual uplift in 4K gaming over a Ryzen 5600 for £50-60 second hand, which in turn might not help either depending on the games and GPU.

Unless you're interested in core heavy workloads it's a waste of money, gaming is not a scenario under that umbrella.

Depending on the games you play a graphics card upgrade might be beneficial at 4K but that's hard to recommend as you're not exactly forthcoming with information.

More memory may help but given we've no idea what if any issues you're experiencing it's impossible for us to recommend anything.

1. What is the exact full specification of your PC? This includes power supply, not just the wattage but the exact make and model.
2. What games do you play or intend to play at 4K?
3. Are you unhappy with your current performance?
4. What is your budget?

Good questions

I will find the exact information/specifications.

I am not unhappy with current performance, actually everything is working really well I am about to upgrade to windows 11 also. to be honest it was just a general FYI for myself in future no immediate rush :)

32GB is an obvious upgrade, how about the GFX? what are the next best options for me?

From a 3060 12GB and for playing at 4K, I'd suggest no less than a 5070 or 9070, which are over twice as fast.

But, if the 3060 12GB is doing well at 4K, I'm assuming your games aren't that demanding and either card is overkill.

So I’m considering upgrading my CPU. A Ryzen 5 5500 seems reasonably priced at around £60-80 at the moment. However, I’m not sure if there’ll be a significant difference in performance compared to the Ryzen 5 3600?

Also, I’m concerned about my CPU fan. I think it’s a Be Quiet fan. How would one go about finding out if the CPU fan will be safe with a Ryzen 5 5500?

p.s memory prices are still sky high! I was hoping there would be a slight difference but if anything prices have got even more higher!

Not worth it at all IMO, a 5600 maybe.

with a 3060 and 16GB RAM a 5600 would be ok, a 5700X3D better but prices are nuts. Extra RAM won't give you much extra gaming performance unless you're already going over 16GB which is probably unlikely.

ok so what's the deal with the 5600 there are a few variations which one fits the bill for me? xt, x, gt? i dont even know what the differences are but suppose a couple of extra camel camel camels won't hurt

admittedly I didn't realise the 5600 had been mentioned in this thread previously I assumed it was the 5500 but yes ofc 5600 much better when doing a comparison but they are more expensive unless I look for a 2nd hand one.
