Mass shooting at Bondi beach Australia

Not sure if this has been posted already but its very unlucky that these people weren't stopped considering the people who were willing to risk their lives to stop them.

I guess this is what happens when your everyday heros are given a choice whether to potentially kill someone or let them go. Brave people who tackled them.

Was saying to my partner yesterday you have to wonder how many people would A) know how to operate these weapons and B) be capable of essentially killing another human being

Yep, very brave of them. Posthumous medals required.

And just think, if they weren't allowed 6 guns or whatever it could have ended there and then after he had wrestled the gun off of him.

Instead the attackers just got another gun out and shot them both :(

Some of those people are ridiculously heroic. Only increases the tragedy of their deaths.
What kind of sick **** takes aim at a 10 year old with a sniper rifle?

The same kind of sick **** that saw his father get shot next to him and didn’t bat an eyelid and carried on killing.
There’s not a pit in hell deep enough.

also - head in sand V

The only thing I think which needs changing, even as someone relatively pro-gun, is category A licensing of shotguns (which is also something IMO needs addressing in this country) - I don't see a reason for shotguns, even break-action, to not have the same may permit criteria as rifles.

except it is - if you listen to c4 interviews, like this pm, with Australian jews they say anti-semitism increased over last 2 years , but maybe correlation !=> causality.

juxatposition today of live bbc reporting from west bank on settler violence with the Bondi further reports

e: maybe government needs to ban reporting from W.Bank/Gaza as well as any protests in UK

Why didnt Christians start a pogrom against Muslims throughout Europe and the western world when ISIS were committing genocide?

The policeman who stopped the attack has been named:

It does raise questions about the initial reaction of some of the uniformed officers though.

And on the subject of police etc. dropping the ball - it seems the police have had to issue a correction - the firearms license was previously granted then expired and then granted again *after* the son was on the ASIO watchlist!

One of the Bondi Beach killers was granted a gun licence two years ago, years after his son was investigated by ASIO, the revelation emerging as Premier Chris Minns commits to introducing the toughest gun laws in Australia.
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon on Tuesday said Sajid Akram’s 2015 licence application lapsed when he failed to provide a photograph. He reapplied in 2020 and was granted the licence in 2023 – four years after his son came to the attention of ASIO.

This has happened with school shootings in the US too - the armed police officer at the school decides to just hide or local police stand at a cordon, it's happened in the UK too in the barracks shooting in Northern Ireland - the armed, guard service guy decided to hide and not intervene. Obviously this was over in minutes but notably the hero detective who did choose to intervene was only armed with a pistol... meanwhile on three different occasions unarmed members of the public attempted to or indeed did (temporarily) disarm the attackers (including it seems a couple who paid with their lives) but this police vehicle can be seen arriving on scene, perpendicular to the bridge, and... well it seems like the opportunity was there to do *something*.

Of course it's going to be an imperfect solution but even if shooting at them from an undesirable range at least interrupts things - the detective who did successfully stop them managed to do it from 40 meters away.

Well not quite. The father was from there originally, but moved 27 years ago to Australia.

The son was born in Australia.

Apparently they've made 6 trips back to India but India claims they were not radicalised there and says it must be Philippines but it could have been local as well since Australia has pro Isis and pro jihad clerics such as

Wisam Haddad who publicly calls for Jews to be killed and the gunmen were members of his group

Its been revealed the gun men were from Hyderabad, India
Well Hyderabad is also a city in Pakistan as well as India. I guess it doesn't really matter, what I think people more care about is who radicalised them, and are they still out there, (most likely yes.)

The internet radicalised them obviously /s

All I ever hear about is people blaming these things on the freedoms we hold.

If any more surveillance is imposed, the terrorists get that little bit closer to their goals of eroding our way of life or making us fearful to live as we have.

Out of curiosity, what do you think the motives were?

Well interestingly the Met and Greater Manchester Police are now going to be taking an arrest approach for the use of globalise the intifada chants.

Police forces will make arrests over intifada chants

In a statement following Sunday's mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney, they said: "Violent acts have taken place, the context has changed - words have meaning and consequence. We will act decisively and make arrests".

At least the Police think the motives are related to these types of sentiment.
