200 protein powder samples - the review thread.

Per4m Whey
Chocolate Fudge Batter
Good flavor but has that classic chocolate whey sawdust aftertaste

6/10

What protein powder brand would you guys recommend? I am just after some to increase my daily protein intake. Not for training purposes, i dont eat a lot these days.......just want to get a decent protein powder that i can add to some smoothies....

need to try some of the trained by jp stuff, seems like quality/taste is actually ok. A lot of the stuff I've tried bar goldstandard is awful.

I got 3 tubs of this when it was offer at £40 a tub.

My experience of powders is Protein Works stuff way back in 2012, and more recently: Eddie Halls' Beast Pharm Whey and the ON Gold Standard. And for me the Gold Standard stuff is the best - the chocolate is ok. I mainly take with water, and with water it tastes like a weak hot chocolate, with milk it tastes like coco pops milk. But for me the main reason I prefer it is because it mixes super well. The Eddie Hall stuff tasted good but it didn't mix so well.

Thanks....i was looking at the Gold Standard brand earlier....

I'm currently working through a tub of USN Ultralean, flavour is quite good for the vanilla and strawberry and it mixes decently, haven't tried the others.

Not too bad at £17-20 per 1kg and it acts as a meal replacement too. If you're unsure/new to powders it's a fairly good entry point, I mix mine with unsweetened almond milk.

These are spot on for the price too tbh:

Sale on atm so they're only £20.
How do these hold up with odour from mixing a dairy product? I have one I got for free a few years ago and the inside is a rubber/plastic spindle. Despite not much use and cleaning it within 2 hours after use it picked up an odour I could never shake off.

On the original thread I have bought quite a few flavours of Amfit Nutrition Whey Protein (Rainforest brand) when they were on special. The white chocolate is very solid to me without being overly artificial, sweet. I don't think it's isolate but has never given me an upset stomach. There were some small lumps if mixing by shaker and hand only but if using a blender was great.

I've not noticed any issues with it, I have had problems like you're describing with a cheap Warrior brand mixer bottle with a metal spindle thing in it though.

Hope you don't mind if I jump in, here's my review of Protein Works vegan vanilla.
Mixability 10/10......I don't make as a shake, I mix 30g into about 300ml of full fat milk using a cheap ebay frother, mixes completely in seconds, never known a protein powder to mix so easily, I then have it with Weetabix.
Taste 8/10.....tastes fine to me,not powdery, not overly sweet and I am really sensitive to sugary foods.
Sum up it's the best protein powder I've bought for my particular use ie I don't drink it

I’ll probably get shot down for this but I’ve been using PBN whey from Amazon for a while as it’s half the price of Gold Standard and other “premium” brands and it seems to do the trick for me

I don't know if you want to add my reviews of the Beast Pharm Whey taster packs:

Chocolate Fudge 5/10
Vanilla 4/10 too sweet - and I usually like vanilla stuff
Strawberry Cheesecake 2/10 was definitely more cheesy than 'cheesecake' did not like this at all
Banoffee Pie - 5/10 - nice banana flavour
Jammy Biscuit - 7/10 - my favourite one. It tastes just like a jammy dodger.

I ordered a big tub of the Jammy biscuit and I like it.

I've since gotten tubs of ON Gold Standard Double Rich Chocolate. The macros are better, and for me the best thing is that it mixes so much better with just a shaker. With the Beast Pharm wheys I shake the crap out of it and it still has lumps in it. The ON stuff mixes so much better, the taste is great (like coco pops milk), it's got better macros, and buying it at costco it is cheaper.

Great value:

P.S. all my ratings are with water not milk.

Can confirm the Jammy Dodger is very nice, even with water.
Better than anything I've ever had.

Like you say they just list "beef protein" under their ingredients, collagen is protein from beef. What even is "beef isolate", you've got muscle or connective tissue as the two places you can get protein from in an animal and like I say you're not getting steak for that money.

Leucine is the most important amino acid for muscle protein synthesis/mTOR activation, to disregard it because you're not "bodybuilding" is a very strange stance.
If it was made from actual beef then all of the amino acids would be there in abundance.

Using Kai Greene as an example is just LOLs, we all know the pros of that era would sell you whatever rubbish paid them the most money while claiming to be 1000% natty.

You'll find that if you read supplement adverts/branding/whatever there's generally no definitive claims made because they legally aren't allowed, it'll always be things like "could", "may help with" etc so false advertising is generally not going to be an issue.

Like I say the only reason I give so much weight to my friends opinion on it is one because he's one of the most well regarded supplement formulators around (whoever sent you that reply is recommending his whey) and two because why would he miss out on all the money to be made.
Would you say it's fine to have beef isolate just to up the protein numbers throughout the day, but as long as other sources are also included, i have a couple of Huel shakes a day so that's Pea and Brown rice protein which i understand together is complete, then also a serving of Whey so should be hitting the amino acid numbers. It's just nice to have a different texture and flavour.
My go to whey is MyProteins Whey Isolate i find it gives me less gas than the standard whey.

trained by JP chocolate pistachio is decent, so agreed on that. Still not something I'd consider drinking for fun but it doesn't leave me wanting to wash my mouth after either. I do drink them with full fat milk.

Anyone have any recommendations for only mixing with water.

Currently enjoying optimum nutrition vanilla ice cream. Most are alright with milk but this is the only one I've had in ages that's nice with water.
