Reminds me when I had my Series X and LG CX arriving very close to each other 5 years ago now.

My old 4k TV was on its way out, the reason I swore never to have a Very account again and my SX arrived 2 days before my OLED but I simply refused to use it with the old TV. That 4k Samsung simply the worst TV I have owned, went from a 1080p plasma to that "thing" and then my LG CX.
I've never liked Samsung TVs. The image always seems out of place in them for whatever reason. It's hard to explain. It's like it makes it look like everything is filmed on an old set somewhere.

Edit: it's apparently called the soap opera effect.

Thanks, will keep that in mind, is it similar to motion blur in games or something?
It's just post processing jank that either adds more frames in to smooth out motion, which makes everything look super smooth or it's some colour processing settings. They're easily disabled but most folks don't even venture into settings period, especially older folks.

Nothing wrong with Samsung's however saying that, all TV's at this point are garbage eventually thanks to updates bogging them down over time. As a result I disabled updates ages ago.

Movies (big budget ones like Avatar etc anyway) tend to be ok if it’s still on as they are displayed at much higher frame rates so it’s not as noticeable. TV shows however can look awful. Some people actually like it but I personally think it’s horrible.

When I set my Aunt and Uncle's Samsung QLED up two years ago, the first things I did was disable all the picture stuff. Smooth motion being the first to go.

Don't know how many people I see with that enabled and it looks dreadful.

But was the same when I made the mistake of seeing the Hobbit at the cinema and didn't realise it was the HFR version. It was horrible and unnaturally smooth.

Ditto on the soap opera effect, my mates know me well enough that when I have visited them over the years and they have bought a new TV I just ask them for the remote to turn that nonsense off, sometimes though having it on the lowest setting works best, as, depending on the TV, there will be screen judder when the image pans in any direction.

Due to visit my best friend over Xmas and he has recently bought a 77 inch C4 and I will demanding the remote as he hasn't even set a suitable screen saver yet. My other mate did the same thing with his C7 and it has horrendous screen burn because he didn't have one setup.

Can someone who has or in the past has owned both a PS5 and a PS5 Pro tell me if you actually tell much of a difference? My mouse is on the buy button for a PS5 Pro with a disc drive for £648 but I'm still unsure if it is actually worth that much money. My wallet would be much happier with the standard PS5 and disc drive for £379.

I mean yes but I don’t own a PS5 anymore to compare it day to day but is £270 more really that much? Maybe to some. From my own experience it’s been amazing with new and older games and games that wouldn’t necessarily benefit from a base PS5. The extra SSD space is nice to have as well. Outside of the PC space it’s the best thing there is. Only you can really say whether that’s worth it to you or not. For me personally I am very happy with it and don’t regret it for a second. More is more after all :)

For context I spent almost £200 on a pair of trainers earlier this year and I’ve used my Pro a whole lot more than that :D

The Pro is supposed to be getting a significant software upgrade next year which should make the difference more defined between the two.

AI summary:

The PS5 Pro is slated for a major software upgrade in 2026, bringing a new version of its upscaling tech, PSSR2 (internally called MFSR2), that promises better image quality, lower memory use, and faster processing for smoother 4K/60FPS gameplay, significantly enhancing its capabilities beyond current features. While the base PS5 doesn't have the hardware for this, it's a big deal for Pro owners, potentially making it a more worthwhile upgrade from the standard console.

For me it has been worth it, and a noticeable improvement.

However I have an OLED TV that supports 120hz.

In general, i'd say it does everything better than the base PS5, but some games it is more noticeable than others.

The future upscaling updates will add another dimension to the performance improvement.

I'm really happy with mine, but then I guess I am biased because I bought one! :p

My TV does 4K/120 but I went for a slim to save some money. I don't play competitive games and I don't think I'd really benefit from going for a Pro. I spent half of the price difference on the Portal which has had some use so far and the novelty I don't think will wear off for a while yet.

For reference, my PC can go to 1440p UW at 144 FPS, which is useful on some games but not many.
