Sorry :o

We fitted a water butt in our back garden this summer and we were wondering what we need to do to protect it over winter and through possible freezing temperatures. Do you empty yours, leave the tap open or what? Or leave it full and assume/hope it might not freeze?

Takes a real cold snap to freeze the amount of water held in a water butt, normally just the top inch or so will freeze, also unless it's a completely sealed lid then the expanding cold water will just go out the top if needed as it's the easiest way to expand

Just in case London gets hit hard with a winter from the 1960s, you need to leave room for the ice to expand. This usually just means leaving the top off or loose.

I could give you some Arctic circle water butt advice :p -30⁰C

Empty it and put it in the shed.
