3090 to 5090 - talk me into (or out of) it

Good evening gentlemen and everyone else

I currently have a 3090 in a WC loop running just fine. It was a cherry picked Suprim X (I had 7 cards to choose from) and it clocks like a dream and runs cool in the loop. I don't have any real need to upgrade as I play at 1440/240. I'm also not much of an AAA gamer these days.

Enter my situation: about 3 weeks ago I bought a 5090 FE. Don't ask me why; I don't know. I got it retail and all that jazz. This isn't about cost or money for me.

Now, the decision point: is it worth the upgrade from my 3090? Noting that I have to drain my loop, acquire a block for the 5090, fit the block, and then refill and bleed the loop. I could run the 5090 on air - that's also another option but obviously goes against the ethos of my rig.

What are your thoughts?

Absolutely. The 3090 was quite a disappointing card for me. The 5090 would be a monstrous difference.

Whilst you'll have a bit of inconvenience with installation, the 5090 is looking likely to stay top dog for another 18 months at least.

You've mentioned you don't really play AAA games, and play at a lower resolution but that could change, and the 5090 will give you the flexibility to change either of those and still get great performance. If you keep the 5090 for as long as you've had the 3090 that will ring even more true as you may well upgrade monitor etc during that time.

Alternatively as i've been a really good boy this year.. gift me the 5090, and stay happy with your hassle free 3090.. I mean you really don't want the hassle of changing your loop, or all the hassle of returning the 5090.. who wants that when money is not an issue...

I can even collect the 5090.. told you I was a good boy ;)

Sell it and put the money towards some DDR5.
I'd probably have enough to buy 8GB with the way things are going! I'd be better off plucking the GDDR off the 5090 at this rate.

I have been contemplating a 4k OLED upgrade in tandem with the 5090 - that would really showcase its abilities to me and could make it feel worth it. I did open up another thread about that topic.

I looked at my list and checked it twice... your username didn't come up. Uh-oh. :D

For some reason or another, I still don't feel up to it. I've been trying to talk myself into doing it for 3 weeks so far and failed catastrophically. Old me would be chomping at the bit to install some new goodies. It's a sad day, gentlemen. :(

A mate of mine, bought a 4090 a few months ago, to find it had been scalped of it's GDDR!

It'll be a huge upgrade. I went from a 3080 to a 5090 and games ran massively better. That said you'd need to be able to take advantage of the power. I have a 3440x1440 UW monitor and a 4k OLED TV, the former only really uses the full GPU on recent triple A titles, but the latter uses it all in a lot of games. So since you said money isn't an issue, I'd say it's worth it if you think you'll upgrade your screen in the near future. At 1440p it might not be.

Return it and buy a holiday instead. You've basically said you don't need it, do you normally spend a couple grand on things you don't need? 3090 will be good for a while if you're not playing AAA and at 1440

OP if you have money to throw away then keep the 5090

Otherwise it is a huge waste of time and money if your games already play the way you want them to.

I do own a 3090 and 5090 myself but the only reason I got the latter is because I built a totally new PC. I don't notice any difference in the games I play using either card.

It's not that simple as returning it and buying a holiday, unfortunately. Let's just say that if I put the money in my pocket to spend it, that costs me a lot of money.

This is absolutely just money to throw away.

The main thing that's putting me off is the fitting of the GPU block is pretty horrendous. I think I'll run it on air first and then make a decision. I'll fit it... some day. :D I need to pull the trigger on a monitor upgrade in tandem but can't find anywhere to go and look at QD-OLED. :(

If you can afford it then why not ?!?!?

I went from the 3090 to 4090 and now the 5090.

Why!?!? Because I can.

If you have the money, why not? Granted, 5090 is the utter worst price/performance upgrade of all time on an absolute level. Yes, it uses enough energy to run a small home. Moreover, it sounds like you don't really need it for your use case. But if you take coat out of the equation, it is a big upgrade and will last you a long time.

Have a look at the Philips Evnia 32M2N8900, amazing monitor. I didn't like the Ambiglow to start with, thought it was a gimmick, it grew on me and it gives the impression of a larger screen and quickly follows the light content on screen.

What are people playing which actually NEEDs current, top end hardware? Almost everything released over the past 5 years has been Ubisoft grade slop. Some geniune indie games are good, but they tend to need a low spec so this is just a waste of money.

I play a few games but mainly upgraded from a 3090 for my experiments in AI. The work of Abandoned Films really piqued my interest, political satire videos are also a big interest. There are plenty of sacrificial lambs for the slaughter in the second category.
