Anyone else feel they've been priced out of the PC hobby?

i buy most of my stuff used. Though i tend to buy GPUS etc new as i want a warranty on something that costs that much.
Buying used is definitely the way to go. Most of the parts in both my current computers were bought used. My main pc cost me ~£1200 and my secondary cost me ~£1000!

The only thing I insist on buying new is the storage IMO.

I dont mind used storage to be honest. my PCs are just games PCs really, so nothing that cant be downloaded again. I have a NAS that i use for media and backups. though i could do with more space... and HDDs are going up in price too... of course they are

haha fair enough. i have important docs on mine so really don't want it to go boom.
and as always, back up back up back up

Certainly got me re-thinking my plan to upgrade my 5600x build.

Only have 16GB DDR4, so thinking now I could look to get a 5800X / X3D and swap my 3070 card to a 9070XT as a way to extend it's life for a couple years yet.

I feel slightly priced out the market currently, I started to collect parts to upgrade my 8 year old PC, I got an amd 7800x3d and when I checked not even 2 months ago, ddr5 ram was a fair price, now im looking around £300 for a kit, not sure I want to even upgrade now, the price of the processor, new motherboard, and then ram will just be extortionate. I paid less for the amd chip that what a ram kit is currently going to cost.

Frankly i was only just able to sleep with the price of my new build. Another 100 and i would have sacked if off.

Done now, and hope to get 5 years minimum from it. Which with the forcast seems easy.

Keeping two machines running now.

I was quite lucky to do my latest build as a 40th gift to myself at the beginning of the year, not that I had bad build as it was.

I kept the previous one (5800X3D, 6800 XT with 32GB 3600MHz) for my wife, but as she's barely using it I may sell it on to help out some of the folk needing an upgrade.
With the sky high prices I was thinking of selling my secondary pc. But on second thoughts better to keep it as a spare just in case something happens to my primary pc and I can't stomach the replacement prices :/
This is only thing keeping me back, the fear is real.

the heaviest load on my secondary (7800x3d/4070 super) is watching amazon prime videos ad-free

Spot on.
We’re keeping it mostly for a dedicated sim rig. But it didn't escape me that it was wise to keep it even if we were not doing that.

Its actually just been rehomed in a new case and the aio cpu removed and added to my gpu loop i had. Never got round to doing the cpu.

Half tempted to remove the water incase of a leak!!!

Hopefully being all new.. replacement is managed by the supplier. If RAM doubles again i dont think i have to stump up the difference right?

Not really an issue for me as I'm at a point in my life where I'm doing ok for money. However, 20 year old me would have really struggled. It's going to be hard for kids to get into. Our kids who get hand-me-downs are going to be the only ones coming in to the scene at this rate.

Expensive Ram especially is a biter pill to swallow as unlike a GPU or CPU upgrade it really doesn’t add any excitement or meaningful performance as it’s just one of those components like a PSU that’s seen as more of a necessity.

Never have chased PCs anyway with my builds often lasting 6-8 years.

That said, this time around was the most I had ever spent and that's without all the recent changes.

Would I spend that I did this time for less in next 5-6 years? Not entirely sure if I'm honest.

Having 64GB of ddr5 go out of warranty will be an exciting time though
