Can someone please help with a PC build? The last time I built a PC was when an AMD Barton 2500 was the go to chip (as with some BIOS changes, you could overclock it to a 3200) so I'm well out of the loop and I can't get my head around whether to go for AMD/Intel, Nvidia or Radeon etc. I understand a self build is normally the best value for money but with the price of RAM at the moment, It looks like an off the shelf option might be better? Again, happy to be advised accordingly.

Budget:
c.£1200-1300 (this will also need to include a monitor.)

Usage:
Gaming (flight sims and other games)

Preferences:
None - not too worried about 4k but I assume this woiuld be out of budget anyway.

Current Hardware:
None

Peripherals:
I can sort out a keyboard and mouse.

Special Needs/Requirements (inc Wi-Fi):
wi-fi.

Any possibility you can source some DDR4/DDR5 from somewhere without paying £££?

Normally £1200-£1300 (base + monitor) is plenty enough for a 1440p PC, but if you have to pay ~£300 for the RAM, not so much.
I guess I could go 2nd hand on the RAM, although I don't have access to the MM at the moment as I'm not too active on here.

ram really is the big issue at the moment :/
DDR4 is prob the best bet at the moment.

Corsair Vengeance LPX White 16GB 3200MHz DDR4 Memory Kit £84-110

cheapist i saw quickly

which flight sim are you planning on ? SM Slight Simulator 2025?

i have seen some complete systems with decent specs for good cost but you have to shop around.
i saw a system listed in croydon looked tobe ex display for 1350 32gb ddr5 5080 & 9800x3d
slef build you get what you want.

Got the mach 2 gaming pc for my son after considering prices with building worked out well with 3 years warranty.

AM5 7500f with a 16gb 5060ti will do 1440p but went 1080p high refresh.

Things to note it's 1tb of storage and the motherboard has limited storage expansion but still happy overall.

Managed to get it at lower price also.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,178.94 (includes delivery: £0.00)

damn. ocuk really slumming it with 5200mhz ram nowadays
it's really that bad huh...

Still a better deal than self building in that price range at the moment unfortunately. :(

Reminds me of the GPU shortage during lockdown, it was often cheaper and more viable to get a full PC than a stand alone graphics card. I even knew people who were buying them to part out the GPU and then selling the rest of the systems on second hand.

My son's pc came with 6000 MHz just before they changed it and it was £1029, then it went up £50 and memory dropped to 5200mhz . Another increase of £20 but considering memory prices that's a £70 increase overall which isn't to bad .
