Tormented Souls 2 - Third Person Survival Horror

Just finished this today. In game timer was about 9:10min, so was a decent length. Got more out of than that though, if you die & reload that time doesn't get added to the file & there are, not sure if spoiler as the achievements give it away but just in case
2 endings, so reloading an older save, going back and doing what is needed for the other ending is extra playtime, but obviously doesn't stack with the other ending time.
Steam says 20 hours, but that just counts the game being open. I did throw away some progress a couple times as I was too sleepy to solve a puzzle and it wasn't worth saving again. Some puzzles did have me scratching my head for some time as well.

Achievement for doing it in 5 hours (not for me, don't care for achievements and don't like rushing in games), that doesn't seem unreasonable to me once you have already solved the puzzles and don't waste time going X place before you have Y thing.

Saw a few complaints about lack of ammo, I didn't find that an issue. Same with saves, despite saving 20 times, I still had 20 or so tapes at the end, really not sure how people are burning through saves to the point it's an issue.

I know there were some complaints of bugs, but my play was mostly fine. Only real annoyance was the bug where if you equip something from inventory then immediately try to move (at least I think that is the trigger), she just sort of stutters and one lift got stuck, but right at the end when it didn't matter so meh. I was still alternating save slots as I do on any game with multiple just in case.

For those that care, a lot of the achievements are currently bugged and just don't pop, so if that's your thing, might want to wait.

I ended up completing this over the last few days. Yeah, not bad! It hits the spot in terms of all the things I like about these 'retro style' survival horror games:
  • exploring in a macabre atmosphere
  • snack hunting
  • killing zombies / demnons
  • puzzles
At those things, it succeeds :) For what it's worth, the major differences that set aside TS2 from others are:
  • no inventory limitations
  • occasional time travel / alternative dimension exploration (usually to help with puzzles)
  • more supernatural elements
  • puzzles are mostly decent, not too obtuse and require more attention to detail rather than the baby level puzzles in RE.
The good:
  • The game takes you through a number of environments that are mostly self-contained.
  • A satisfying variety of weapons.
  • Puzzles that made you go 'aha!' more than frustrate.
  • Fair enemy variety.

The bad:
  • Some confusing bosses that have a 'knack' to them. You will either breeze right through them on your first go, or fail miserably because they require different strategies than other enemies.
  • A slightly underwhelming plot... but it's just an excuse for the game so whatever.
  • The time travel / alternative dimension mechanics feel less used / relevant than in TS1.
  • It's a bit buggy. I got glitched into taking damage a number of times because if you move when closing the menu you will glitch on the spot... very annoying. The 'equipped' weapon in the menu didn't always correspond to what you have equipped either.
  • When you die, you go back... this is as per the classics but it's a bit tedious really.
  • An impossible to get 'good ending' (without looking it up).
I'd give it a 7/10 overall. Take a point off if you don't like this genre. Possibly add a point if you love it.

Edit: It took me around 14 hours to complete the game, but add on a couple of the 'when you die you go back' moments, grrr.

Nice review. I am playing this right now. Only about an hour in the game, but agree with what you have said with what I have played so far anyway.

Was not planning to play it just yet, but a kind soul kindly gifted me a copy :D

Is your 14 hours game time from the steam counter or in game? I think in game one wont count deaths. If in game counter, your steam one is probably closer to 20 hours

I read online ot is a 9 hour game. But I like you will no doubt take quite a bit longer than that.

Do you plan on playing RE9 on release by the way? If so, I will just break my rule and pay the premium and join you playing.

Last time I think you was having issues when RE4 Remake came out so you did not get to play for quite a while or was that RE Village?

Steam says I’ve played it for 19 hours which syncs up well with my lost hours and a few extended pauses :)

There’s a YouTuber called Avalanche Reviews that plays a lot of indie survival horror games and it took him 16 hours apparently, so 9 hours seems speedy! But possible.

I’ll deffo be playing on release with the exception that it comes out when I’m on holiday - so will be booting it up early March.

I was having a howler when village came out… 3090 was killing my PSU with power transients, grrr

Gameplay wise my saves show 4 and a half hours or so now. But Steam is probably double that due to messing up with ammo and being afk.

Really like the level design. I wish these guys were hired out by capcom to make a Resident Evil game like the classics. It could be a side game like Revelations, but in the classic pre-rendered backgrounds and gameplay of the originals.

What holds this game back is forgettable characters and story. Also not a fan of time travel stuff. Otherwise really enjoying it.

Devs should move onto a new IP I think, they have the talent. They just need to get a better story writer or even just use AI tbh, would be much better than what they got going now.

Completed it today and I agree with Nitefly's score of 7 out of 10.

The level design and graphics I liked. A lot to love for old school resi fans. What I did not like was the time travel stuff and it's paranormal/mystic style. The story and characters needed to be better. This is where I shave of 1.5 points alone.

I felt the devs are quite talented and have the experience now. They should move on to making another IP with a better story and characters. Preferably without time travel and closer to Resident Evil style would be great :D

Took me 12 hour in game time to complete. I did use a guide when stuck, so it could have been a few hours longer had I not done that.
