Also I might be wrong and this is fairly niche use case, but the G5 won’t pass through DTS from what I know whereas the G4 does?
But still to my previous point, unless you actually can’t see the TV in the living room right now, you aren’t going to know what you’re missing unless you put them side by side.
I’ve got a pretty bright living room and my G4 looks fine. But then so did the B7 in another bright room.
Occasionally I’ll see reflections but it’s always perfectly watchable.
When I bought the G4 I think it was literally £1000 less than the G5. I didn’t think £1000 more was worth it and can’t say I know what I’m missing.

If you want to have an idea of the difference between the G4 and G5 side by side watch this:
As you can see it is a pretty marked difference. Whether it is worth the extra cost is purely subjective.
The G3 and G4 have DTS pass through, the G5 does not but as you say this is a niche case as most people who need DTS will go via their AVR first. I'm probably one of the few that goes into the TV first so benefit from DTS pass through.
Also the G3/G4 were rumoured to get IMAX Enhanced (for sound) compatibility but I don't see that happening now.

Still. Removing a feature is pretty lousyBut surely most people with a soundbar connect it to the TV and their devices to the TV also?
Presumably there aren’t any streaming services that use DTS so my guess is that is why they’ve removed it.

It’s one of the main reasons I immediately discounted the extra for the G5.

Ok so Ive noticed that I cant play bluvray rips from usb on my g5 that have dolby true hd audio. The only way ive found to get around it is by converting the audio to pcm in avidemux. This allows me to play the movie but then dolby vision doesnt work, it plays it in hdr.
Shield vs the other players? Shield seems the best from a usability POV
yeah not cheap though. I just bought a cheap generic box for £40, I have no need for the subscriction apps (they don't work as DRM license not working) just installed corelec on a microsd card. Even cheaper 2GB model is fine, average memory usage is about 800MB at most.
The IR remotes aren't very powerful though so you need a good universal IR blaster to replace them.
Just had a quick look about £45 for S905X4
Does it do all the HD audio formats
yup, only issue I had with my 904x3 was AV1 (I only had one TV series in that anyway) but the newer chipsets support them. My AV pre supports Dolby, Dts, DTS HD Master, Dolby Atmos, Dolby HD, DTS :X, and both HDR types and the kodi box outputs everything fine
Before you buy check with the corelec site that CPU is supported
Just be aware the IR blasters with these cheap players are typically non unsuable, you might throw it against the wall haha ...since I have a learning remote it's ok.
Or you could use a USB RF wireless keyboard, something like this

You'd need a microSD card to install corelec on it (bypasses the built in Android OS)
