Just found these two area of the roof of my 2017 M240i peeling this morning.

I very much doubt it's intentional damage. Could it be the result of road salt concentration, as I recall taking a "face" full a few days ago when a grit lorry was coming towards me?

Is it the clearcoat, which is like a transparent film, under the topcoat, and is it likely to need a full respray of the area or roof?

Red is a nightmare for lacquer peel unfortunately. The entire roof will need repainting.

I would be surprised to see that sort of damage overnight though, usually it’s a fairly slow process (unless you get a jet wash underneath it). Generally happens when there is a stone chip, lacquer weakens and once it stays to get moisture underneath that’s it, eventually getting larger.

You may be able do that section of the roof and blend it in enough so people don't notice. It's the roof so people aren't going to be looking right at it. Or vinyl wrap in black and go 2 tone :P

This is a problem that's existed with red paint for as long as cars have been painted red unfortunately. It's definitely gotten better in the last 20 years or so, but not eliminated. That's gonna need a full respray on the roof

Unfortunately common with red paint due to the instability of the pigments when exposed to UV.

To wrap it you would still ideally need it repaired beforehand though otherwise the wrap will be uneven.

Do you mean a wrap?

I am not against something like that because I've already got black grill, side skirts and accents and for some strange reason I've got grey wing mirrors.

I actually ment retrofitting a real carbon roof

The post was more tounge in cheek based on the costs involved. My good mate who has spent a stupid amount of cash on his M235i was was quoted around 3k all in. Obviously a respray, which would be my personal preference, or a wrap would be a much cheaper option

Yeah, that's over the top!

Yes, the roof area is probably the least noticable place to do a "blend in" job.
There is a video on youtube from Forsensic where he repairs the clear coat on a red Porsche, it came up pretty good for a low cost home repair, well worth a look.

Can't tell if this is a joke response or not? :D

I had this issue on a yellow car. But as it was a banger I just left it. Looked like trash. But I wasn't too bothered. Cost of repair is probably a lot due to work involved (I'd guess)

we had this with our c max also red. it was at the front edge of the rear wheel arch.
tbh i was really annoyed as it was about 3 inches square, ford had put some form of clear plastic on the arch edge but it started just past it. i was lucky managed to flat immediate laquer and dust a coat of halfords can laquer over it ,looked ok and seems alright even a couple of years later.
i did wonder if it may have been repainted and i caught it with a jet wash?? handwashed since:)

new paint on cars does appear very thin assumed it a feature of water based paints

It was a genuine response to spending £3k on a carbon roof to sort out my issue. I'm gonna get a couple of quotes next week to respray the area then decide. My local trusted bodyshop is closed this week, and I've not heard back from a Chipsaway franchisee. Usually, the bodyshop isn't that much more than the latter.
