Does anyone know if a 7800x3D would be stable on an Asus B650M-A WIFI II motherboard on V0303?

As title, does anyone happen to know if a 7800x3D would be stable on an Asus B650M-A WIFI II motherboard on Bios version V0303 from 2022?

I tried updating the BIOS, screen went blank for eternity, had a nightmare getting it to boot up again, was convinced that I'd bricked the mobbo. As a result of this, I dare not try again!

Google says:
BIOS Version 0303 & Later: The 7800X3D is supported. However, it is strongly advised to update to a BIOS version (such as 1616, 1813, or newer) that includes the AGESA 1.0.0.7 or higher patch to fix voltage issues.

I know that it's unlikely, but has anyone else been in this position and knows if it worked okay for them? Otherwise I'm really leaning towards just returning the CPU for a refund and forgetting I ever had this idea! I'm at ultrawide resolution and the 7600x + 4070 TI I have is great already for me on the typically very optimised games I tend to play.

Is it scaremongering just to encourage people to get the latest BIOS, or would it likely be absolutely fine?

Honestly, i get these daft ideas from time to time! :)

It will probably be fine, the rates of 7800x3d’s impacted was low. But they obviously changed something with the updates, so it is almost certainly worth updating. Doesn’t the board have a BIOS with an update facility within it? should be pretty simple right just put it on a formatted USB stick and follow the instructions? :)

Yeah, updated plenty of motherboard BIOS’s before and this was a nightmare. I’m definitely not attempting it again.

So I really just need to know if it’ll work on this version stably or do I just return the CPU and forget about this plan entirely… :(

Of no help to your exact question...however...
The board has bios flashback so even if you make a big hash of flashing bios, there is always an escape route and you won't brick the board with an initial bad flash.

I've updated bioses of many a board over the years... I've only ever had one flash gone wrong

Sounds like it should work so long as it’s supported? The voltage issues only impacted a small number of chips and boards. I can’t imagine you will be using PBO or overclocking on this board to add additional stress.

There is no issue as your current chip would have experienced it. Although there must be some fault with the motherboard if it’s not accepting the update. Are you sure you’ve got the correct BIOS? Is it passing the checksum?

Just go through the correct process to update the bios. Sounds like something went wrong, but don’t be held hostage by your board and a small hiccup.

Good call. I’ll check this afternoon in some free time but fairly sure it was the correct one.

The 7600x has been completely stable on it for 3 years now, never crashed.

I do gather that the 7800x3d would be supported from googling, but can’t conclusively find out how stable it would be. Argh! What to do, what to do… I really would feel daft if I ended up killing the motherboard somehow, to the point I’m hugely reluctant to try again. I feel like it’s given me a solid warning with the last attempt…

I guess with this thread I was really just hoping to find someone who is on a similar order BIOS and had no issues, therefore feeling no need to update the BIOS further.

What I would do is download the latest bios again and flash it using usb flashback (don't forget to rename the bios file). There have been at least 28 new releases since 0303 (which isn't even on their website) many of which have performance and stability tweaks plus security fixes. You can't brick the board as you have bios flashback and there is no way I would want to be on such a outdated bios. Sometimes a bios is reliant on the board having the latest chipset driver installed so if you haven't got that already pop over to AMD's website and download the latest B650 chipset driver (it will most likely be newer than the one on Asus website).

I can't find the BIOS you mentioned and it appears to predate anything available on their webpage? Assuming it is from 2022, it would predate the X3D as well.

If so, I would not want to use the CPU with that BIOS.

In reference to stability: Asus do say what changes were made on the later BIOS. So far as I'm aware, you can replicate those manually by setting your own limits.

Going by the CPU compatibility page, you need at least bios version 1409 for a 7800X3D.

Question.

On the latest bios it says "Note: This BIOS version cannot be rolled back to previous versions".

Does this mean that even flashback will not be of use?

Why two listings came up in the CPU support seach I'm not sure though I'd recommed using the latest bios as one bios version has this change:

PRIME B650M-A WIFI II BIOS 1413 2023/04/28

SoC voltage for Ryzen 7000X3D series limited to a maximum of 1.30V to protect the CPU and motherboard.

People running earlier bios version then this could be killing their processor/motherboard if the SoC is running above 1.3v.

What is the exact error that you are having as the only time I have an issue with the bios update itself on my MSI z690 board is that having to have the file system on the USB drive in FAT32 format instead of NTFS. Backup any data on the USB drive before hand.

I just wanted to say thank you for all the replies, it's really appreciated, but I've already decided to just return the CPU and have less drama in my life, especailly as it's the PC I use for work. My gut is that there might be something a little wrong with the motherboard already and unfortunately I have next to zero time to look into it properly atm.

I stupidly didn't think about updating BIOS and thought i'd just be able to slot the new CPU in and job done.
