In for MOT..

Sadly it's showing bubbling on the arches and sills, and no idea why it's got Accord type R wheels on it, but still nice to see and a pleasure to work on.
I had one as a company car when I worked for a Honda dealer many moons ago, and they are a bit special.
There's not a lot that comes close to a perfect driving experience when bouncing that engine off the rev limiter.

On holiday in South Africa right now, kept passing this lovely old MK2 Escort parked near the local fuel station, for sale. Wandered over to have a nose when we dropped in for petrol just now. Looked a little tatty, but like most things over here, not a lot of rust. Asking price of 83k ZAR (~£3700). I imagine it might be well sought after back home, just for almost being guaranteed to be free from rot.

My mum had a canary yellow one of those in South Africa when I was a youngster, 1.6 Kent engine with the four speed manual. I still remember her maxing it out in the Drakensberg once, 160kph on a massive downhill. One of those core memories.

She kept getting offers from people to buy it as it was absolutely minty fresh and loads of rally drivers wanted it for the engine.

Dunno how much she sold it for when we left though.

Might not have been far from where we are now...R527 just outside Hoedspruit, you can see the Drakensbergs in the background of the second pic. This had a 1.3 badge on the wing, so I'm guessing it's a more humdrum model. Still, it's nice to see it still kicking. In fact there's quite a lot of older stuff here. See lots of MK1 Golfs around, often completely battered but still running as they just don't rust in this climate.

The Golfs were still being made in SA until 2009. They're not all as old as you think ;)

Really? Even the older models? I did not know that, explains a lot! However given the absolute state of some of them, I think I can be forgiven for thinking they were original 70s vintage. Saw one yesterday that looked like it had rolled, then just tipped back on it's wheels and carried on. Every panel dented, windscreen smashed, and the frame twisted so it crabbed down the road.

Citi Golf. Sold new until 2009.

They're considerably more developed than the Mk1, with higher trims having heated seats, cruise control, leccy everything, etc.

Random related fact, the OG Beetle was still sold in Brazil until 1996.
