Why are toasters either expensive or ****.

I do have a fancy made in England Rowlett 6 slice toaster, retails for £240 or something but I bought it as a returned unit for just over £100 with spare elements.

Its not actually great at toasting and even worse if you want to make 3 or 5 since its really only designed for 1, 2, 4 or 6.

But its a design that has not changed in many decades and I actually found a video of an old lady in the US who said she had used it daily for 25+ years and it had never failed.

I was sick of all my £40 type high street toaster always failing on me so I decided to get the expensive one.

I have been using if for years now and still looks like new because I clean it once in a while.
The way they designed it is just incredibly simple with almost no moving parts or complications, but what is there is all robust and very high quality looking.

I love our Dualit, the better half not so much, It's not cheap but what other Toaster is Made In England and you can buy all the spares for. Re the Kettle I was disappointed to find you need to send it to them to get the element replaced.

I shot myself in the foot there, but you can do just 1 2 3 or 4 slices or even toast 1 side at a time for Bagels or Buns

I used one of those when I stayed at a hotel, fantastic bits of kit

A good hotel will have it finely tuned so if you put a slice of bread through once the toast is underdone, but if you put it through for a second time it is burnt.

Dualit is the only way.

Got the long one for sourdough but it can be a bit hit and miss due holes in the bread.

yep. I think I bought my Dualit toaster about 25 years ago. Had to replace the timer once which was a cheap and easy repair. At the time it probably cost about £80-90 so probably has depreciated at about £3 a year and still has all the style of a classic design.

Absolutely agree, our Dualit is 15 years old and my Mom's is about 30 years old. You can still get a lot of spares even for the old one. They're a great investment just make sure you coose the right one for you.

The key was to put the bread in first and then go off to fill your plate from the self service and hope your coffee was still hot by the time the ancient rickety clickity machine had done something to the bread

I have a gino d'acampo toaster which is ok, but there's something about it that ain't quite right

There is nothing to them, it's a basic heating element, surrounded by plastic, a cable and plug.

I bought one in Tesco I want to say £15 you can't even fit a slice of bread in it, like normal supermarket sized bread from a normal loaf, I mean wtf?

So I look and other toasters are £50+ for what?

Anyone got a decent toaster?

Same with Microwaves mate, the technology hasn't changed in 40 years and they keep selling the same thing at ridiculous prices

We've got a 3 slice Rowlett toaster, was given to us by the sister in law when they moved to Oz and they had it for a few years and we've had it for 26 years since. Just needed a couple of heating elements in that time

perfectly good solution with an open fireplace - which could toast you too , much more entertainment value than netflix on a winter night ..
but the Greens put the dampers on them.

reduced demand for marmalade by genZ probablyt isn't helping technical evolution of it ... when the influencers can't make any more money on airfryers perhaps they'll be back to toasters.
