Dell XPS 15z or XPS L702x

15z every time from me...I support a heap of sales people; we just put MacBook Airs on the "choose list" and people are switching over to them in droves because they are lighter than a feather and still pack a good punch. There is probably some "look how sexy my machine is" mixed in with that...

    Socket G1 CPUs - swapable?

Anyone tried this, or have an opinion on if it would be successful... I have a dead Dell 1557, just the power connector, or maybe mobo, I'm pretty sure the components are good, memory, processor etc. The processor is Socket G1; an Intel i7-720QM. There are a good few processors in that...

Out of the frying pan into the fire?

About to go "laptopless" - 1557 just died completely - refuses to charge and won't recognise AC adapter. I'm typing this on the XPS that goes back on Wednesday (its still randomly bluescreening). Decided to salvage what I could out of the 1557 into a low spec machine just for web browsing, was...

Out of the frying pan into the fire?

Full marks to Dell on the return front; just one ask about attempting to correct the issues, but a firm no from me has a pick up arranged for a return and a full refund...no £20 charge for it as the machine is defective. Onward!

Out of the frying pan into the fire?

Thanks int...I'll wait until I clear this mess up first...not sure attempting to get a highish spec laptop is the right approach any more. I may end up going for a simple netbook for browsing and a desktop for the video editing.

Out of the frying pan into the fire?

Good to hear yours is fine...I could do a clean install, but, having seen the GPU freeze and the couple of BSODs my worry is that something more fundamental is wrong. Its probably why this particular unit has been recycled through the Outlet...it is extremely reminiscent of my 1557 but due to...

Out of the frying pan into the fire?

Its the fire! XPS arrived yesterday; did not auto configure at all on first start-up, switch off and back on, tell it to proceed as normal (not attempt a repair) and it does first time configure OK. Next switch-on hung! Obviously a GPU deadly embrace, plenty of graphical noise output to the...

Spec me a laptop (roughly £1000)

Thought it might be a bit ropey; the m17 r3s are all pretty high spec out there at the mo and beyond the £1k budget, nice machines but loads of memory etc. But hope it illustrated the principle of a machine with lowish mem and disk falling within range...hopefully something similar with a more...

Please Help - looking for a fast Business Laptop

List for that 15z is actually 10% on top, you need to locate a voucher code to use at the check-out, can't point you directly to anything from here, let me know if google doesn't produce the goods. Saundie's options are Outlet related and have probably been snapped up by now, its a very popular...

Spec me a laptop (roughly £1000)

Confirming FF; a favourite approach is to lift a relatively good spec Alienware off the Outlet and then take it to another level when you get the readies, not sure if this is a good candidate as I don't major on these but its out there and you could SSD it and put more memory in etc:- £905 -...

Out of the frying pan into the fire?

Nice one! I keep dropping back to the Outlet just out of interest whilst I'm awaiting the new arrival; not seen anything over and above the items no one seems to be interested in though. I don't seem to be having any great luck with stuff being shipped to me, I cancelled a Samsung prior to...

    Looking at a Samsung Ultrabook...

Your student discount looks very, very good on the Mac, its giving you way more "per pound" against anything else. Are you going to use MS Office or need other mainstream Windows apps? This is where it can get a bit tricky, for example MS Office is a ported 2010 version called 2011 on the Mac...

    Looking at a Samsung Ultrabook...

Had you considered the NP530U4B-A01UK, its a bit bigger and costs a bit more, but it comes with an SSD already installed and is still cheaper than the Mac? Not that I have anything against the Mac, we deploy them at work and the end users forgive everything about them in terms of the realisation...

    Advice for New Laptop...

Hi Andy, That machine is a nice find, its on a par with the i5 option I listed above, the processor is a year older than that machine, but still good, it'll turbo boost up to 2.933GHz, the graphics card is in fact a little better, and that's what counts more than the CPU at this level for...

new laptop recommendation ! old one fried

Why do laptop wifi cards get so damn hot?

Looking at the thermal-cooling assembly I think the GPU is not far off that spot too, its the furthest chip from the cooling fan with the copper conductor having the hardest job to conduct the heat away back to the heatsink and fan. It could be bleeding heat out into the general surroundings...

    Samsung NC10 - SSD Advice

I haven't got an NC10, but someone out there on the interweb has installed a 128GB Crucial m4 2.5-inch SATA 6GB/s. Hope that gives you a line into understanding the connectivity (dunno about the vouchers).

Consolidating mobile and desktop - W520

That Lenovo looks great! You said you'd looked at HP too? I assume the EliteBook 8560w Mobile Workstation? The only other I can think of is the Dell Precision Mobile Workstation M4600 Advanced.
