    New Linux user help

If it's an M-Audio Audiophile (or something similar, like one of the Delta cards), install alsa-tools-gui (from synaptic, which really isn't complicated in the slightest). Once that's done, press ALT-F2 and type "envy24control" in the box and press "Run". This brings up something which looks...

    Thinking of trying Ubuntu

Provided the onboard sound is not disabled in the BIOS, it should be available in ubuntu. It's a bit of a shame about the X-Fi. Instead of giving information about the card to the ALSA (advanced linux sound architecure) devs, Creative decided to create their own closed-source driver, which is...

    Thinking of trying Ubuntu

VLC would be quite simple to install. Most linux distributions supply a large collection of software in internet repositories which you can easily access with the graphical tools provided with the distribution. For VLC, it would be as simple as opening the Add/Remove software tool (from the...

Got these odd messgaes when trying to open gedit

In fact, don't do that, creates dependency problems. :( sudo apt-get install libesd-alsa0 if you have already Edit: Seems that lots of things in ubuntu depend on ESD, and the ESD library, if removed, or changed to the OSS version breaks them. Guess it's a stalemate, but at least no system...

Got these odd messgaes when trying to open gedit

Chances are that ESD (which is responsible for the system sounds) is trying to use ALSA for output. Try apt-get install libesd0 and see where it gets you.

Got these odd messgaes when trying to open gedit

You can ignore this unless it's causing you problems. Ubuntu uses ESD for it's system sounds, and for some reason, gedit is complaining on its behalf. ESD is frankly old and rubbish and should be replaced (My opinion isn't helped by the fact that it doesn't like my sound card). Anyway...

    How about a Linux gallery?

My desktop: Nothing special, just ubuntu 6.06 running GNOME. I'll use XGL when I can run openGL games in a non-hackish way on it.
