Project ilogic [Dual 1366 Xeon Rig]

Yeah the SR-2 is the main one, issue is there's never really been that many enthusiast dual socket boards, letalone ones with SLI support. Intel's D5400XS has SLI/CF, SR-2 has it, Gigabyte have a relatively newish (well Broadwell) WS board with SLI/CF support (MW70-3S0) as do Asus. As you say...

    Custom desk table top advice

Haven't done it myself but I do know a guy who did his own setup similar to what you're considering and he has a vehement amount of hate for the Linnmon table. His advice is to get a proper solid wood countertop, I'd imagine places like B&Q or Wickes would have them, pretty sure B&Q have...

Project ilogic [Dual 1366 Xeon Rig]

Project ilogic - named after the relatively illogical component/platform choice, and a short lived Spanish electronic group from 96. This isn’t a build log per say in the sense it’s already built and running solid, more of a log consisting of all the part choices that led up to its current...

Anybody used thermal pads rather than paste ?

I'd imagine the price difference to be pretty negligible, something like Arctic MX2 is a few quid at most. General consensus for years regarding paste was a pea sized dot, though with chips nowadays having a larger heatspreader/die people opt for a line/cross etc - heavily debated subject. I'd...

Anybody used thermal pads rather than paste ?

As mentioned prior, pads are reserved for VRM's, and paste is for cpu/gpu chips. That being said there are pads for cpu's known as graphite pads, but honestly you can't go wrong with paste. If you're concerned about it spreading out/getting on the board etc you can just get non conductive paste.

    1366 X58 Xeon 5650

This mornings update: somehow at the point where it posts/boots fine with the i7 950, but the x5650 does not - very strange considering I had the x5650 running fine prior to this. Cleared the CMOS, everything is default so no DOCP enabled. Board is on latest bios, but as per @mushtafa...

    1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Yeah, checked the socket - no bent pins, debris, paste or anything I could spot. On BIOS version 1803 which is the latest for that board, considering flashing it back to the version prior to that (0701) as that was the version that added support for the Xeons - long shot but at this point I'm...

    1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Sorry for bumping a fairly inactive thread but wasn't sure where to post, running into some issues on an ASUS P6X58D-E. I've had my fair share of X58 rigs but this one has absolutely stumped me, will try to explain it best I can. Board was advertised with an i7 950 & stock cooler as faulty with...

Supermicro X8 won’t post with PCI card

Hey all, will try and keep this concise as it’s been a long evening of troubleshooting and head scratching. Got a FireWire card from a friend that works in his system, have a bunch of MiniDv tapes that need capturing. Turned my rig off, popped the card in the PCI slot and powered it back up...

    Worth spending £100-£150 on?

That Dell definitely sounds like one of those eBay bodge jobs that when it comes down to it is a **** old optiplex marketed as a "GAMING" pc because it has a 730 and some blue fans and I'd definitely say ripped off. I've been fiddling with X58 systems for a good few years now and 150ish for that...

    1366 X58 Xeon 5650

and it begins, will eventually be dual x5650s. waiting on another heatsink so i can chuck the other e5530 in there and then throw it in a chieftec case. had low expectations it would work at all but when it booted first try i was over the moon.

Who actually "lives life to its fullest"?

what exactly is "living life to the fullest"? making the most of your time doing something you love? always trying to push boundaries and discover new things? it varies from person to person and one persons idea of something simple ie a night in playing a game could be considered living life to...

    ***The Vapers Lounge*** 3.0

Any recs for an rda and or rdta? Been using a Cleito Aspire 120 on a Sigelei 213 (original not plus) and it's alright but the coils seem to vary from batch to batch and it leaks more than I'd like. Was looking at the limitless RDTA as it wouldn't require dripping as much as a standard rda but...

My old PC - GPU upgrade?

if you're not bothered about buying used then 970s go for around 130-150ish, think 7850s can be sold for about 50 quid too.

    1366 X58 Xeon 5650

not oc'ing, dual socket supermicro board. have seen the higher chips going cheap but i need two of the same model which could be a hassle when buying two chips separately. i think two 5650s will probably be fine though.

    Upgrade / New Build Perspective

imo 2500ks are still fairly competent chips but if you're getting lock ups/bsods etc i'd probably go the cpu upgrade route and stick with the 970 for a while.

    1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Yeah the pricing seems to be jumping around a fair bit, think I paid 40 for an x5650 in January and now it's 20-25. You think it's worth paying for the marginal differences between the 5650/5660 or just stick with the 5650?

    1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Cheers for the reaffirmations everyone, with a 970 for 90 quid it's shaping up to be a fairly powerful budget build.

    1366 X58 Xeon 5650

@Stu being that I'll be running two on a Supermicro board there's no chance of clocking it up, was just curious as to if the higher clock speeds would have a noticeable increase, a pair of matched x5650s seems to fluctuate around 40-60 whereas x5670s are 100+.

    i7 8700K @ 5300MHz achieved, advice needed on temps

in my own experience i feel stress tests hit the cpu with unrealistic workloads so the temps that aida, prime95 or whatever give you way higher temps than you're likely to see in any realistic scenario, you said yourself that stress tests were hitting 90 but gaming etc 65-70. a full loop while...
