    Stuck on trigonometry question

I can't for the life of me understand why complicating the problem with unnecessary equations and factorisation. I gave the solution in post 2, using basic trigonometry. The rest of this thread is like describing how it's possible to remove a screw with a molewrench. That's always possible...

    Stuck on trigonometry question

Surely if you have a value for the square root of 73, you can calculate the height of the green line in the last example. Because you have the angle of 90° on the other side of the perpendicular to work with. You can then calculate what X+2 is from the left hand triange and subtract 2 to get X.

Basic exams to use IT services

The most noticable difference I've noticed in the younger generations is a basic lack of street wisdom. I was a director in a company that took on a couple of graduates for a job in sales. We only needed one salesperson, but the financial director who interviewed them, couldn't decide which one...

For those who love their SUVs

Yes I can see the virtue of owning an SUV for something like that. Are you suggesting there are many SUV owners who need to tow race cars though? I'm desperately trying to think of the last time I saw an SUV towing anything. I'm also trying to think of how many people I know that had suffient...

    Removing gorilla glue from glasses

I've never been offered glass lenses as an option from any optician. Gorilla glue is polyurathane based. Only acetone will disolve that, but it will also wreck the lenses. I'm afraid the only option is to visit the pound shop and invest a quid in a new pair of glasses. Incidentally, I have...

For those who love their SUVs

WHAT is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare?— No time to stand beneath the boughs, And stare as long as sheep and cows: No time to see, when woods we pass, Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass: No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like...

If you could ban one person…

I'm sorry to disappoint you @peterwalkley and my appologies if there is a typo here, but I encountered this forum for the first time a couple of days ago. I am utterly gobsmacked by how unwelcoming the likes of you have been. You ought to do yourself a favour by taking a look in the mirror and...

Madeleine McCann cops ask Home Office for more money to continue search for missing child

Madeleine McCann was born in 2003. She's no longer a missing child. In the unlikely event that she's still alive, she'll be regarded as a missing person and have to be treated as any other missing person now. Although people will always go missing for whatever reason, it's worth reflecting on...

Barclays "Make a payment" feature question

Then I doubt the other one went through. If it subsequently appears, which I doubt it will, it will be an easy matter to convince the bank you paid twice for the transaction through a glitch in their system. The vendor will have a unique transaction ID the bank can check with to see if that...

Barclays "Make a payment" feature question

I suspect you'll find the answer on the Barclays banking website if you visit it via a PC rather than a phone. It may also allow you the chance to reverse the payment if it went through and you don't want the hassle of recoving the money you paid twice for, thanks to issues with apps that give...

    Who can advise?

Thank you. Did Commodore Perry have the same success in joining this site as he had when opening up trade with the Japanese Tokugawa Shogunate, or is it a rule here that everyone has to prove they are totally paranoid about outsiders before being accepted?

    Who can advise?

I tried to post a thread about Matt Hancock being turned down fot the UN job on the Speakers Corner forum, but there wasn't an option to start a new thread there. On other forums I see a message that I don't have permission to post there. I'm don't want to change the world, I'm not looking for...

    Who can advise?

I'm a newbie here and I'm struggling to get my head around how this site works. I seem to be able to post on some threads or start threads in General Discussion, but the options to reply to posts or start threads in some forums aren't available to me. Is there an explanation why this would be...

For those who love their SUVs

Nevertheless, you need to be pretty green to get taken in by the hype around SUV sales. I've read the comments about how fabulous some think they are with interest, but am a bit astonished that nobody mentioned how great they are for carrying an e-scooter in the boot for the event that the...

    Increasing incompetence in humans

I'm not sure the OP got the thread title correct. Surely it's a lack of common sense rather than incompetence? I do agree that people are far less competent than they used to be though. It would be fascinating to see how the generations that followed me would have coped in Thatcher's Britain...

    UN sees sense

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-58940128 Former Health Secretary Matt Hancock has had a job offer from the United Nations withdrawn. Mr Hancock announced this week that he had been given a role helping Africa's economy recover from Covid. The UN said he would bring valuable experience...
