Thanks everyone, and I'll check the comparison tables too. Was looking at the MSI HD 7850 as someone was good enough to link. Problem is that a new card is a stealth operation: a replacement cpu/cooler operation tends to get noticed. Anyway, thanks for your help will check out second hand cpu's.

With a CD 6400 in this board I have managed at last to raise the FSB from 266 to 313 Mhz and tightened up the memory timings a notch (PC5300). Previously I couldn't get above about 275 then I saw a thread about raising the PCI to 120. I set the PCI to 115 and got the FSB to 305, then to 313...
Had it been the cause of the mcb tripping, you would have had plenty of local evidence......................
However, you should investigate what is causing that fault
I always thought ring power circuits were 20A but I am propably out of date
