    spec me a gun

I'd have suggested something with a martini action, just to be different. I've only had the priviledge of firing one once, and it was firing .577 cal solids, with black powder charges. Spat sparks out the muzzle then all disappeard in a cloud of white smoke. Much fun :) (Even if it does feel...

    Equallogic SAN design? Opinions?

I don't use Veeam in production but I've used trials of it and we use a VMWare aware backup solution for VMs on our SANs which uses similar methods to create backups. Performance is decent enough. The speed obviously depends on the workload and layout of the storage estate but we've had no...

Dell SSDs, RAID 10 and SQL Server

Sticking the DBs in RAM doesn't fix anything. Yes the parts of them held in RAM are going to be faster but heed the following: SQL doesn't load entire databases into RAM because the RAM is there, if data isn't being hit hard it doesn't always remain in RAM. It's up to SQL how it manages this...

    Equallogic SAN design? Opinions?

I would think so, provided there is sufficient storage left in the pool you're removing them from to accommodate all volumes bound to that pool. This isn't something I've tried doing on mass. If in doubt, talk to their support guys. They're usually pretty good with this sort of stuff.

    SCCM OS Deployment

Not that this really helps much but - I use sysprep and clonezilla :)

    Equallogic SAN design? Opinions?

The equalogics can replicate data, but it's not great. They replicate snapshots and on schedule, it's not synchronous and the replica volumes are offline and require manual fail over. In short, if you want Highly available business continuity (in a disaster scenario) the EQL PS series aren't...

Dell SSDs, RAID 10 and SQL Server

I also agree with iaind. If it's likely to need the iops of SSDs, you should probably make sure it actually does. Also make sure the the rest of the setup is up to that kind of punishment. in addition I have these points to make. 1. RAM is as important as disk I/O for SQL. You have to get your...

    VPN and China

Used to be, most next gen firewalls can SSL Decrypt and see that it's tunnelled traffic and block it. Given the level of cheap resource china has to throw at tech, you can bet this is well within their means. One thing you could try is see if it's a complete blockade or just vs the west, and...

    Gigabit Network Problems

Connecting a device on a completely different port on a switch will not affect throughput between two ports on a switch. That is the very definition of what a switch does. Is this definately a swich and not a hub. A hub WILL slow down to the speed of the slowest connected device.

    Extending wireless network

There are two types of homeplug, wired and wireless. Wired ones just act like an extension of the wired network. A glorified network cable through your power cabling. The wireless ones behave in the same way but one end will have a built in wireless AP. It'll behave like an additional access...

struggling to bridge router and WAP

Yup I think this is the best way to go. Plus in the future if you upgrade to a nicer N router, you can turn the wireless on and use both to improve coverage and aggregate wireless bandwidth. Which will be a noticable improvement if filesharing off the server.

    Gigabit Network Problems

This could also be symptomatic of a dupex missmatch. Test and verify all your cables. Check your devices are actually reporting a 1Gbps link speed, tell tale sign of a duplex mismatch is one of the devices reporting half duplex, almost all devices support 100mbit full duplex through auto...

    Extending wireless network

You can use Homeplugs, some are wired others have built in wireless APs. Personally I don't rate the integrated APs compared to a dedicated one, I'd go for a second AP connected to the router using Homeplugs. Assuming homeplugs couldn't be replaced by running a cat5 cable of course.

Only getting 20Mb/s on 60Mb connection - wireless issue

There are many many thing that can affect wireless throughput. 3x3 802.11n can do 300Mbps, most consumer kit won't do that. You might get 130Mbps link speed right next to it. Throughput is a lot less than link speed. Do you have any other devices connected to the network? If a device...

    VPN Software Recommendations

VPN software is much of a muchness, there's tonnes out there. the security aspect will primarily depend on the VPN settings you use. Decent ecryption and a nice long complex key is most important. For simplicity if you can create a point to point tunnel between two routers this is probably...

struggling to bridge router and WAP

It's not worth the hassle, just do this ^ Dual Radio APs are expensive, it'd be more cost effective to have the AP and router service wireless (at least 5 channel separation). Then connect them together using homeplugs, which are comparitively cheap and easy to use.

IT inventory / asset management infrastructure

We monitor these through helpdesk. When something is broken or stolen etc it's a helpdesk ticket to replace it. We can then report on the helpdesk to get overviews of failure rates etc. Some solutions, spiceworks being one, actually manage IT purchasing too and allow it to be linked to tickets...

Dell PE 29** Origin Hard Drive Replacement

I haven't experienced this exact scenario but on most systems now the light is on to show the drive is present and healthy, then it blinks with activity. Not sure if the caddy would do that or the drive firmware would instruct the back plane to run the LED. Either way I'm pretty sure that's...

IT inventory / asset management infrastructure

mmm. I don't like Access DBs, but the roll of stickers is a valid point. You could easily take spiceworks or similar and enter that info. I.E associate asset numbers with a workstation. Or even device serial numbers, save the labels. Personally with the cost of monitors, keyboards and mice so...

    500mm Cases

There are a lot more short 1U and 1U empty chassis out there than there are bigger ones. Mostly because if you're buying something that big, it's rare you'd not want it to ship ready to use. I'm not sure how cheap you think you can do this though, £500 for a 16bay chassis with SAS expander is...
