Yep, I totally understand where you're coming from, and know it would give us a lower interest rate. However, even with the lowly 10% deposit we're aiming for we'll have more than enough left over each month to overpay a considerable amount. The satisfaction of having done it on our own...

Sorry for reviving a relatively old thread - but I thought I'd close the loop on "our story". My partner and I were both lucky enough to have our jobs go exactly as we'd hoped in the last month, and have therefore decided not to accept her parents offer. We should have all of the money we...

Lazy meals - what are yours?

I have an exquisite dish I refer to as "**!* rice" It's rice, peas, and sweetcorn, all boiled in the same saucepan (peas and sweetcorn go in a few minutes before the rice is ready), drain, pour sweet chilli & soy sauce on - eat.

stir fry on the electric cooker?

We have an electric hob and don't have any issues cooking on it with our wok - in fact, we use it maybe 3 nights a week. It's just a little Ken Hom 10.5" steel wok, which is pretty well seasoned now.

Quite an odd site - 'Martin Manley: My Life and Death'

Quite interesting. He says he wasn't depressed or anything, yet in other areas says he doesn't think he ever knew what happiness was... He looks a little like Charlie Sheen in some of the pictures.

    Salting your steaks...

Last time I was out in the states, my aunt cooked a steak dinner and used this stuff on the steaks before BBQing them: They were so awesome I bought myself this massive tub to bring home. I've yet to actually cook myself a steak with it, but have used it on other meats. Next time I have a...

Chowder never looks appetizing, but can be amazing. I had smoke salmon chowder from a sour dough bread bowl whilst on holiday in the states last year, it had so much flavour! My mouth is watering just thinking about it. This evening we had quit a nice Thai chicken noodle dinner round a...

    Salting your steaks...

I've (kind of) tried the Heston Blumenthal method of... 1) Salt on both sides. 2) Leave on a wire rack in the fridge for 2 days. 3) Take out of the fridge a good hour or 2 before cooking. 4) Cook in a hot pan for a few minutes on each side. I'm really not a great cook, and here's where I think...

Can Single people with low wages afford a mortgage?

Using your weekly hours and overtime, try and figure out what your annual wage is, then plug that into some online calculators and see what comes up.

I look at renting vs owning slightly differently... When you are paying off a mortgage, the interest you pay each month is essentially your "rent", any money paid on top of that can be considered an investment. So, in our case, we're currently paying £650 a month to live in a small 2 bed flat...

You're right, I am presuming prices are going to stay roughly the same or increase a little. I've just read that the help to buy scheme is going to be running from the 1st of Jan 2014 for 3 years (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-21849974), which will surely only push prices higher, and...
