8800 GT or Radeon HD 3870 XT

The 8800GT and GTS (both G92) are the same length as they are on the same PCB with almost the same components. the GT has only a single slot cooler however, whereas the 3870/3850/GTS all have dual slot coolers.

The single slot option pushed me away from the 8800gt, seems to run tad too hot for my liking, and aftermarket coolers push its price upto and near the 8800gts which is just to expensive for a student like me. So guess what I've just brought myself? :)

The gecube is coming on thursday:p I know a lot of you say 8800gts but £50 is a lot of money for me :) The 3870 seems cooler, runs quick enough at 1280x1024 and the gecube version has an alternate cooler and is already slightly overclocked. Also found out it aparently includes 'The Black Box' but don't want that, my orange one is prettier

What sort of performance increase will I see from a x1900xt to a 8800gt runnin at 1280x1024 ?

That is dependant on your CPU being overclocked. At stock it will hold back the card by a fair bit. At a higher CPU speed that GT will run like a sportscar on nitro compared to your X1900 :).

Even without the CPU overclock the GT will be fairly faster but you really need more CPU speed to enjoy that card how it's meant to be played.

I don't think the cpu is that big an issue - if possible run at a very high resolution (1600 x 1200 plus whilst still getting good fps) to put the burden on your graphics card

the 8800gt is 140 now which ain't bad :)

I'm sorry but 1280x1024 IS CPU bound territory!.

I don't know how you missed the post with the OP's resolution as it was only 3 posts up from mine?.

Please read the whole thread in future before commenting as to not confuse.

I would recommend playing at 1600x1200 (or higher) with a 8800GT and AMD Athlon 64x2 4400+ setup IF ones monitor can go up to that as it places relatively more burden on the GPU ;)

Very pleased mate, runs Cod4 maxed very nicely.

Not sure if it my imagination, but the general in-game picture quality looks better than my old x1900xt.

Brilliant news. Lets hope I'm not one of your victims in CoD4 now :p.

The IQ is better. Well spotted :D.

I'd get an 8800GT with a dual slot cooler or just a cooler that is not stock!!, or even slap on an accelero S1 or w/e they are called, now the stock single slot cooler on my GT seems fine really, sure it gets to 90 degrees and I have to push the fan to 40% but its not loud and 90 degrees is well within safe operating temps, but I bought it in november, or october was it, cant remember, so its not being through a summer yet, infact I dont think anyone has :p, so this summer will surely test the GT's stock cooler and I fear I wont be happy :p

My wall might get burn marks on :D

This cooler any good ?

No mate, I still cant seem to shoot anybody lol

Im on Xfire if you fancy a game sometime

:D Lol - I was like that for my first few rounds, don't worry it gets better (If you are limited in weapons then use the AK-47 to start with. I've only played about 10 rounds all in but I've won some in FreeForAll.

I'll add you in the morning :).

This cooler any good ?

Big Wayne should be able to help out here as he's pretty clued up about the coolers but from looks alone and the fan diameter it looks as if it's the revised cooler and also a better design than the rest that I've seen so far.
