Microsoft Ditch the HD-DVD odd- on

I sold my player on eBay for £60 with 5 HD-DVD's. I feel free now and Im thinking of getting a PS3, loading Ubuntu on it and using it as a blu ray player... unless its the PS3's software that makes it such a good blu ray player/dvd upscaler?

It's possible (although a little cumbersome) to play HD DVD and Blu-Ray films under Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn.

Just looking at the Ubuntu page and that quote is from there.

Linux has very limited access to the PS3's processors, no? I'd get a PS3 and use it stock or just get a bluray drive for the PC in a few months for far less.

I am 99% certain that the linux on the ps3 does not have enough power to play blu-ray h264 etc content at a decent rate. It struggles to play mkv etc which are lower bitrates. Upscaling may be doable for DVDs but blu-ray won't. (The whole other OS on ps3 runs through a virtualisation layer called HyperVisor(I think), which means it does not, and probably never will, have access to the "full" ps3 hardware, like any other virtual OS really.).

You will have to use the "native" blu-ray support in the Sony/ps3 OS to playback blu-ray.

Can I get something Heroes related?

Quickest replies EVAR!!! Thanks Kreeee, Wyrdo & rp2000! I was on the Ubuntu site this morning as its very interesting although as Wyrdo quoted 7.04 is the latest isnt 7.10 the latest? Possibly some better blu ray support there?
If you put linux on does it wipe the ps3's software off or is it launchable from the PS3's "dashboard"? (You can tell Im a noob :p)

& Kreee - how long would I need to wait for a decent PC blu-ray player? Just out of pure interest...

Definitely you. MS have always stated that it was never to be used for games, but there's no need to get stroppy.

lol whos getting stoppy? i just said i remember reading a few articles at the time ( not from microsoft ) and seeing as i decided not to get an xbox i never kept up with it all. Calm down dear!

So out of interest will this dent the xbox camp much? i suspect they will release a blu-ray player add on before long due to demand for one?

I think MS have said they're looking into streaming HD online videos via the 360 rather than a Blu-Ray player. Which conspiracy theorists have said was MS's intention all along :p

It installs it as an "Other OS" (think dual boot like you would on "traditional" PCs). So you have access to both (I think the partitioner gives 10gb to your "Other OS".)

You pick through the dash which to boot etc.

Whilst I have no doubt Ubuntu can playback H264/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD if installed on a PC in a non virtual manner, it won't work on ps3, as all the hardware is emulated/virtualised/hypervised so that alone will lose you a lot of performance. (Specifically GPU is most affected (due to bandwidth needed I think).

Utter rubbish. Sony does not decide who can and can't license Blu Ray. The Blu Ray board of directors is 18 companies strong and it's likely that everyone is able to license Blu Ray on the same terms.

Microsoft don't even need to source the hardware from Sony as there's plenty of companies making Blu Ray hardware.

I stand corrected then:)

7.10 is indeed the latest "stable" release. Briefly, the numbering convention used by Canonical (the people behind Ubuntu) is to name is according to the year and month of release. So, 7.04 was released in April 2007. Ubuntu versions are released every six months, so the version released in October is 7.10.

The versions also have nicknames, so 7.04 is referred to as Feisty Fawn, 7.10 is known as Gutsy Gibbon and the forthcoming 8.04 (to be released in April) will be known as Hardy Heron :)

No idea whether there is any additional Blu-Ray support in Gutsy or Heron though.

Yeah I noticed :p There's no way that I'm spending that kind of money to watch Hi-Def content :)

Not that expensive.

First site I looked at shows

" Pioneer BDC-202BK DVD+-RW Rewriter with Blu-Ray Playback (Black)

86.55 exc. VAT, 101.70 inc. VAT

1 in stock, collect from Store or delivery "

cheap for a reader imo atm (compared to a ps3 anyway). Myslef, I would buy it when the RW capabilities are added to a sub £100 drive (burners are around 80 quid more atm). But having said that, no good in having RW capabilities without software and cheap media.

Ps3's aren't that much cheaper. It depends when you are looking to buy. The PC drive will ultimately provide the better picture when paired with decent software and a good PC but that may be a while away.

Why would the PC drive end up looking better? Just out of interest. Id rather pay for a device I could do more with than a £100 drive for my pc

Because of the range of different software and customisations available rather than relying on what 1 company decided was best. The same reasons why a PC and decent DVD software is superior to stand alone DVD players.
