have not built comp yet weighing up all odds to see which way to go.
are ati cards better , never had anything to do with them only had nvida

nvidia still has the fastest card with the GTX280, however ati cards are not that far behind and better priced. assuming you want to spend about 160 on your GPU (roughly the cost of sli 9600), i would say get a 4850, it will be slower then the 9600 in SLi compatible games, when sli is implemented correctly, but in the 4850 will blow the sli setup out of the water if the game can not use SLI properly.

also if you use AA&AF, the 4850 is a good card for that.

if you can go higher, get a 4870

See my post in your monitor thread, I'd agree with jak731 really consider the ATI 4870 or at the very least the 4850? Sli is well known for being a headache and not always worth it, and of course it costs a lot more! ATI 4870 :D

A 4870 is basically the equivalent of a GTX 260 - probably a little better. A 4850 is the equivalent of a 9800 GTX or GTX+. See here http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/radeon-hd-4870,review-31046-19.html . If you look at the prices of these cards you can see why ATi is so competitive at the moment, but the Nvidia cards are dropping rapidly so it might not be long until they become a viable option again.
