ati maybe using the catalyst 8.7 software and updated the driver only for this beta. they did this on afew other betas before.They say catalyst 8.7

8.7's = 8.512 and dated 03/07/2008
8.8 beta's (supposedly, but they say 8.7 still) = 8.520 and dated 22/08/2008, so only 2 weeks old.

Tried them on my 3870's in crossfire. Slower all round, crysis down 7%, rfactor stuttering all over the place and didn't get through 3dmark06, saw in the 1st couple of tests it was going to be low so scrapped it then and re-installed 8.7 back on. I'm on Vista64 btw.

06 is odd for me, score was lower than it was on my old 8800 GT, and i noticed the first test, first time i ran it, it was hitting about 70fps all the time when they were in the ship coming to land at the beginning, then everytime i tried it after that, wouldn't go over 60 that bit, its well odd. 
Don't think ill bother trying these, the officials are out next week on the 12th.

why did they bother with 8.7? well, why didn't they just hold back and call the new 8.8's coming soon 8.7?
Because this is ATI & the drivers are for all cards & they improved things on the 3XXX line & older cards.
What card do you use now?
Why do you think the cards are crap? IMO the drivers are crap, the card is awsome, blows anything previous from ATi and blows the GTX/Ultra out of the water too and beats the GTX260, the only cards better is the GTX280, the only cards faster are the GTX280 and 9800GX2.
And just about every other review site disagrees with you and id say 99% or more of people that own a 4850 or 4870.
Yeah, terrible cards . Wheel is turning but the hamster has long been dead. Bit of an insane statement to make

Well I've been running these since yesterday evening and they've been nothing short of superb. Lower temperatures (presumably because of the powerplay changes as the fan isn't spinning any quicker), and improved fps across the usual array of games. The only thing slower is 3dmark but I couldn't care less about that.

According to a user over at Guru 3D where they were discovered, it has enabled CF support in Flatout 2 and GRID, which never worked before

Grid worked in crossfire before this new driver release although I don't know about Flatout 2.
