The GTX 260 is faster than 4870

Good luck with getting the GTX260 to beat a 4870 which uses shader based AA. 4870 even comes very close to 280 performance I would say within 10% (except for Crysis & FSX) you can easily overclock all 4870s as the DDR5 ram is rated for 4.4Ghz vs 3.6Ghz stock speed or push it even further using a custom bios.

This gives you:
4870 (4.4ghz) Memory Bandwidth: 140.5GB/sec
vs
GTX280 Memory Bandwidth: 141.7GB/sec

Except that my overclocked 280 has 166.4GB/sec bandwidth and Shocky's over 170GB/sec. Same argument, you clock, I clock. :)

Comments...

1. You've overclocked the cards to different degrees. Although each is obviously clocked to its own limit, this is hardly an apples to apples comparison of the stock cards anymore, especially as each sample of each will attain different clocks.

2. You've done all your testing so far using synthetic benchmarks and one game which no-one plays, runs like a dog and is known to favour NVidia.

3. Unless you omitted to mention it, all your tests have been done without anti-aliasing enabled which is something most people expect to use these days, especially with cars in this price bracket. See how the GTX260 fares against the 4870 once this is enabled at higher resolutions.

Yea i think there was a review showing the cards pretty equal with 4x aa but then it went on to show you 8xaa which the 4870 stomped all over the gtx260 in around 8 different games.

I await to see your games benchmarks, In all honesty though in hindsight you should have really had some more proof than synthetic benchmarks and 1 game before making claims like your thread title. Especially since the 1 game you did test the 4870 comes out on top even if it is just by .1fps.

Except that the GTX280 is the high end part so obviously the 4870X2 vs GTX280=230GB/Sec for the 4870X2 @ stock overclocked around 250GB/Sec.

He asked politely not to be flamed and yet many of you rush in to do just that. I'm a big fan of ATI but I will always appreciate someone putting the effort in to show benchmarks comparing cards like this.

Let's help the OP to be as objective as possible by waiting for more gaming benchmarks with and without AA.

He asked politely not to be flamed

Yes but he then goes and uses synthetic benchmarks and the one game that shows his card in a better light, tests an overclocked card against a stock one, and cites driver problems when the situation is at best the same over on the green side, and many people don't have the symptoms he describes.

I'm really close to just calling this thread flamebait, but i'm willing to let him post proper benchmarks to back up his claims. I strongly doubt they'll appear though, or if they do, they'll be engineered somehow.

i have a 4850 and tbh its rubbish worthy of the bin they were never ready for release they crash in games there slow the drivers are crap.
Im now back on a single 9800gx2 and loving it and im so glad i didnt wait for the 4870 to come in stock cos there more money for the same crap

crash in what games?

I am indeed worn after reading that.

The 4870 competes with (or at least nips on the heels of) the GTX280 in many games... this has been proved by many independant benchmarks. The GTX260 is often left trailing.

@ Mr.B.

One game (Crysis) that is known to run faster on Nvidia based cards and you come out with a statement like this "The GTX 260 is faster than 4870, Yes kids you read that right.". Shame on you :(. Do you really think the people that have bought GTX 260/280-4850/4870 done this to get their benchmark numbers up?. Seriously, your statement is totally misleading. Crysis and benchmark software? pff.

I'd still take the 4870 over the GTX 260. Easy choice. The games I play would benefit from it even though I've still yet to play Crysis I'd happily take the hit in ONE title ;).

@ Willhub. I wouldn't waster my time replying to Cupra regarding anything to do with the 48-- series. If you look through his post history over the last few weeks you will see why :D.

^the nvlddmkm problem is just as significant and has been ignored for just as long though.

I hear people whining about drivers on both sides, but perhaps I am just lucky...I've not ever had trouble with ANY official driver releases either from nvidia or ati, even Creative when I had my x-fi....even when I was on the Vista pre-rc beta
No problems with ATI drivers here with my 4850.

And as mentioned above, as for Nvidia drivers look at all these problems for the the nvlddmkm problem. Thousands and thousands of people with Nvidia cards have this problem ....

This problem only started when I moved from XP to Vista

Below link has some suggestions for fixes ...

So it appears to be more of a Vista issue than anything else to me.
