AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

hi have seen some thread on hear saying that the C2 will not go much above 3.8GHz when overclock, i've just overclock my 955 to 3.9GHz and pass intel burn test, shreenshots below

IBT isn't enough of a test tbh .

run prime95 on blend for 8hours...

i can run IBT on lower voltage for hours but prime95 on blend crashs.

Run both. I've had situations when Prime will run indefinitely and IBT will lock the PC within seconds and vice versa.

Depends which part of your CPU (or the rest of the PC) your're stressing.

IBT and S&M are much better tests than Prime95 for getting a quick indication of whether your overclock is stable. If it passes those two then head for a few hours Prime Blend.

well every system is different really,

i find Prime95 is the best at finding cpu/cpu-nb/ram issues, i know it takes so long.

also afew hours isn't really long enough, even if you've used IBT and S&M first.

Stability:

I think it's fair to say everyone has their own ideas of what is stable it is up to each separate person to set their own stability targets . . . . the problem comes from one overclocker proclaiming on the Internet that his system is "Stable" and not "Stable enough for me" :D

It's semantics really but you can see the problem. The thing that worries me is the "heated" discussions that spawn out of this simple enough misunderstanding in the meaning of a word . . . .

I don't see it's gonna change anytime soon unless all the overclockers agree on what a word means . . . another problem here is some overclockers are more patient than others and I doubt anyone actually enjoys stability testing . . . at least I don't but compared to getting really involved in a gaming session and having your PC reboot/Freeze/Explode! just after you taken down that oh-so-hard end of level baddy then spending a few days stability testing doesn't seem so bad! :p

My PC just rebooted after 20 hours of Prime95 Blend, haha how annoying!

Looping 3dmark06 while priming is not really a good idea at all. Prime95 runs calculations that are sensitive to errors. 3dmark06 can make tons of errors without crashing and will merely consume CPU cycles that would otherwise be used for prime95.

It's the 965 C2s that won't go higher than 3.8ghz, I've been trying to get mine to for ages but I've been unsuccessful. I reckon it's because the TDP is 140W instead of 125W, and therefore gives my 3.8ghz overclock a TDP of nearly 220w.

I have noticed that all of the teams that do that liquid nitrogen cooled competition thing where they get them over 7ghz used to use the 955s. I'm not sure about the C3s though.

But aye, no 8 hour P95 and it's not fully stable IMO.

Most people do not get above 3.8 on any stepping for 24/7 use because getting it stable requires a very large voltage bump which most people consider either dangerous or not worth it for the small gain in performance.

the-tazs what kind of cooling are you using? I personally would feel quite uncomfortable using 1.57 vcore 24/7. Its all down to preference though. Some like to live on the edge!

Really haven't got the time to leave Prime on, given the fact my room's always hot, the temperature continues to raise to the level 60C, where I'm not happy with it..

Does it crash ever? No.

Ok Im up to scratch and read all the post in this topic, took me a good few hours though I must be a slow reader compared to some!

Some interesting posts and think I have a better understanding of what Im doing now, I will however still be asking for advice along the way, still my first time and worried about getting it wrong.

The new Coolermaster TX3 should arrive soon so will move forward from there and try and get above x18.

Thanks for all the help and advice everyone.
