sorry if this is a repeat post but when will we see the 5870 2GB

so will this just be 2gb versions with the same clocks and shaders e.t.c.?

No 5890 or anything? ATI have got to bring out a 5890 surely.
What I want to know is, will there be normal non "6" edition cards? I DO have 3x DP monitors, but I couldn't be bothered with a whole barrage of adapters and really can't be bothered buying DP cables when I've literally this month bought 3 new dual link HDMI cables for my screens.

I've actually already got 2 DP cables, however only one is long enough due to how I've placed my monitors, which suits me as the general eyefinity requirement is 1DP connection anyway.

Then again, 6 outputs WOULD be nice,

What does e.t.c. stand for?

Not interested in the 6 editions, but interested to see what price the 2GB cards come in at. Could be perfect timing as I'm looking to jump from my GTX 275 to an Eyefinity setup in the very near future.

This is a single die card, meaning one GPU, just with 2GB of RAM. Now that's great and all, as it is with the GTXs having over 1GB(that's not shared), it's something we've been waiting for, for some time now.

Yet how that equates into real performance, is a different story. Reviews of the Fermi cards don't talk about it, and it's difficult for them to really pinpoint on that aspect. It's probably safe to say that the extra RAM (meaning over 1GB) does help, much like it helps with dual gpu solutions, such as the X2 or the 5970 or etc - although a bit better, as the card has full access to it.

The difference between a 5970 and a 5870 2GB, is probably going to end up being pretty much the same as the difference between a 5970 and a normal 5870 1GB version - although it has the potential to be faster IF and when such extra RAM is needed. But consider that the normal 5870 does well for average resolutions. It's just not a card for 2560 or greater resolution.

The real purpose of the 5870 2GB, is to provide a card that can push their Eyefinity. Whether it attracts additional normal users/buyers is just a bonus.
It's far from a replacement for the 5970.

If you were holding out thinking this was some new performance setter from ATi, then we'll be mistaken, unless of course multi-monitor is the route you're going. Yet then you have to ask yourself, why not just have a 5970? Price? Well we don't know for SURE yet what the 5870 2GB will weigh in at, and even if it is cheaper than the 5970..again why wouldn't you have one? What person spends potentially thousands on awesome monitors, for such a powerful setup, and then settles for anything less than the fastest card available? It's almost as if saying Nvidia releases a variant of the GTX 480, with 2.5GB of RAM and no other performance changes. If you were after the proper type of more 'beef' or grunt for your multi-monitor setup, wouldn't you achieve an overall better result from SLI 480s, rather than just one 480 with another 1GB of VRAM?

Again, maybe I've not followed this 2GB 5870 train closely enough, and am wrong...but if not, it seems like a very niche product from ATi.

So are they making a seperate Ares and Matrix 5970s?

I think that the Ares is the limited one with 1000 units, and the Matrix would be the normal one?

Nice timing

NDA Lifts in the morning. And it is a hard launch. :)

Say what now? Glad my 5850 is still in the warehouse queue :)
Not saying I will switch it for sure but if the reviews look nice in the morning (and the price scales performance/feature increases) then sign me up.

I just went 5850 as it can be clocked so close to the 5870 performance and I decided eyefinity was not for me....but as I already have 2 x24" monitors I guess getting a 3rd is not so much of a stretch :D

Its not a 5970, look:

Maybe they changed it to an 8 + 6 pin model, as these ones from the Hardware Canucks preview are from earlier samples?

Or as you said, the 6 pin version could be 5850, that is more likely. 2x 6 Pin for the 5850 Matrix, 2x 8 pin for the 5870 :)

I have no idea tbh and don't want to make any statements - neither of the pictures show the pci-e to card length ratio. I would take a wild guess they made it 1x6pin plus 1x8pin and the pictures on that site show the latest version.

You were right earlier, there's only going to be ARES version of 5970 so it's definitely not the one.

Nvidia are screwed!

This fanboy wont go down with a sinking ship.

Time to raise the red flag from the main-sail.

Sooo is Fatboy gonna post it up soon or can I go get some sleep? decisions, decisions Guess I would need to check out a few reviews anyway but gonna be unhappy if they sell out on me. Such a nice easter pressie for myself.

So, will the extra memory on the 2GB 5870 help close the gap on the GTX 480? I'm talking solely about performance BTW, no need to go into the price, heat and power issues on the 480.
