Surely these years of experience should actually be telling you a different story?
2900s/3800s/4800s/5800s all say differently.
The 5800s look worse, but let's not forget that AMD/ATi prices their cards in USD, so we pay the $ to £ exchange + VAT. The 5 series aren't actually that much more expensive than the 4 series when you look at the dollar prices. You've got to take in to account the then and now exchange rates.
If the exchange rates were back at $2-2.1, the 5970s now would be £330, a 5870 £200, and a 5850 £150.
Additionally, this is the second time that nVidia have had to dramatically cut their prices because the ATi equivalents have been so much less.
Surely your years of experience should be saying this, istead of £400? Price gouging aside of course.
I kind of agree but it's pretty much the same situation as the 5870, no competition.
So I agree in that I was surprised that AMD launched the 5870 for £300
They didn't launch them at £300, they launched them at $400. As I said in my last post, their prices weren't that much more than 4870s, what makes them look worse is the exchange rate. AMD deals in USD, not GBP, so we have to pay the dollar equivalent plus VAT.
The poor exchange rate made them quite expensive. At $2.1 to £1 as of when the 4800s launched, the 5870s would have been £200, not much more than a launch 4870.
But because the exchange rate was around $1.4 to £1, we got "screwed" on the prices, because $400 is £285 at $1.4-1, Plus VAT and you've got nearly £330.
That's a good 50% plus increase in price just from our crap exchange rate. So yeah, they're more expensive than the 4 series, but not anywhere near our GBP prices indicate.
The 3870 was sub $250 when it was released, the 4870 $299, the 5870 was $399 so the exchange rate has nothing to do with it. As the performance gap has closed so has the price gap. The only thing that will stop them increasing the prices again will be agressive pricing from Nvidia (as several people have pointed out 460SLI can be had for less than £300 and looks like will be on a par than the 6870).
Well, you could grab 5870 for £280 and 5850 for £190 or so within the first few weeks of launch. Obviously UK pricing will be dependant on many more factors - dollar to pound exchange rate being the main along with VAT. We also have an increase in VAT from 17.5% to 20% soon, although that shouldn't affect prices by much.
Also, gathering from the results we're debating about, if 6870 is indeed 35% faster than 5870, I can't see 460 SLI being more expensive than it. It is a fast combo but will likely be limited at clocks if released on a single PCB and we cannot compare SLI/Crossfire setup prices with single cards as has been seen for quite some time with Crossfire 5770 and 5850. Say 480 is EOL and off the market (or still being sold at that price tag for enthusiasts who are willing to pay for their folding rigs), there's a new GeForce 475 being faster than 470 (making the latter pointless), both being sold at £300 and £220 accordingly. I can see 6870 being sold at £350 price tag.

They'll take it into consideration, but double cards is a fairly minor consideration for them. If we get a 495 type card based on the 460, and there were designs floating about for them at trade shows then it causes problems for ATI (and Nvidia with the 480!).
Lols When I had my 480's on air the idle temps was 40°c Idle temps mean bugger all.

The fact is the 5970 is a cooler running card then the single GPU 480Gtx.
