looking for some advice on what i should be looking to change to get a decent overclock on my msi 6970

i'm guessing i'm going to need a voltage hike to get a decent o/c on this so whats the best way of adjusting the voltage? have downloaded a copy of rbe 1.27 but not sure what i should be changing :)

anyone care to advise

Doesn't AMD CCC come with your 6970, just use this to overclock your GPU.
It doesn't require any voltage changes, they're automatic, just you adjusting the frequencies.

I'd probably go about overclocking the memory clock first, it usually gives out the most performance increase.

looking for a bit more than ccc can go :)

got afterburner 2.1.0 beta 6 wth the voltage control :)

super overclocked space heater (erm gpu) here i come

Well you need a dump of your BIOS to work with RBE to raise the voltage. I used W1zzards script to back up my BIOS over at TechPower.

You can dump a backup of your BIOS with GPUz though. Look for the red box I've put to show you where it is on GPUz in the picture below.

Once you have got your BIOS then you fire up RBE and select "Load BIOS". Now navigate to where your BIOS is and then select it. Now some information should show up on the screen regarding your BIOS. That just means it has loaded and you're set to go.

Now at the top of the page there are four boxes. Each of them are detailed "Information", "Clock Settings", "Fan Settings" and "Additional Features". Click the "Clock Settings" box. Now on this page look for something called "Voltage Registers" and click on the box that says "GPU Registers". Whatever voltage says 1175 will be the one to change. On mine it was Vid3 but some have theirs on Vid4. You'll be able to tell by the 1175 though. Stock 6950 is 1100, Stock 6970 is 1175 :).

Once you have changed to your desired voltages then hit "Save BIOS" and just let it name it .rom at the end. You can change it to whatever you want to name it and just delete .rom and add .bin after you've saved the BIOS with RBE, well that's how I've done it. Use up to 1300 (1.3) for safety although some have used 1350 I wouldn't recommend it yet.

I've been using this to flash: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1920/HD_6950_to_HD_6970_Flashing_Tools.html

Before you dive in, have a read through this thread. http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=137136

If you need any help just report back. It's all easy to do :).

EDIT

Here I've done another picture of the boxes of importance in RBE for you.

I've put a red box on my overclock with stock 6970 voltages 1175 (1.175v). 975/1500. I can hit 1000Mhz on the core with 1225 (1.225v) but that is as far as I can push the memory.

Good luck :).
