GTX 580 worth the cost?

That's what people generally thought last time but it wasn't the case (even my prediction of 20 - 30% turned out to be a little too optimistic). I hope this time there will be a real bump in performance, though I'm not so sure atm.

Since they're not limited by the same fabrication process, and as history before has shown, it's not far-fetched for twice the shaders, and a bump of clock speeds ; 4870 to the 5870 for example.

What that relates to in the real world? Couldn't tell you.

EDIT : But do I think that'll happen this time? Haven't a clue, since people have been banging on about cards coming in X amount of weeks since August, I'm just sat waiting for cards to finally surface, and see them at what they are.

My hopes, are a single GPU on the same performance as a 6870 Crossfire and 2GB GDDR5, I'd take one of them and watercool it.

The 580 is an excellent card, I can't see them dropping much in price straight away new cards are released. You'd be talking a few months down the line.

Even if you pick up a reference design 580 the cooler is really good, keeps temps down and is fairly quiet in comparison to a lot of cards.

Pick up a new one for around £350 or get second hand for £270ish and you will have no problems with BF3.

We're between 4-6 weeks from new gen AMD cards that are 70-80% faster than the 6970

LOL seriously ? Drunken you had your tea or coffee today mate ? The new cards are not going to be as fast as that, also if you are reading up on AMD and their recent events, you may realise there is something really wrong going on inside the company and they are quiet as a mouse this time round (which is not like them), it all hints another bulldozer disaster with the graphics cards and you can quote me on that when they come out and you will see the improvements people are expecting will not materialise and it will be a speed bump but nothing we are all going to go crazy about like the 4870 to 5870 for example and we won't see not even on the new manufacturing process or their redesigned GPU cores, they will bring out cards that are more power efficient with a small speed bump this round (probably no faster then a GTX 580 or plus 10%-15% faster in certain games), next round 89xx expect to see the larger speed jumps on the same process. I also think Nvidia Kepler is not going to make us all go wow, but it will be another speed bump to the GTX 580 and hopefully are more power efficient, I also feel Kepler is going to be a GTX 580 core with more stream processors and a speed bump on the shaders and core and ofcourse a reworked design that will be more efficient at processing the data.. So again I feel it will be a 25% to 30% speed bump there at most and again next round we will see the bigger jump in power.. We will see but my feeling is it's going to be the same old thing we have seen last 2 years with minor speed jumps and nothing like the 4870 to 5870 levels of power increase. Another thing you have to remember is this new process is expensive and is costing them more everyday, at this rate are you willing to pay £500 for a 7970 ? I sure am not and will not pay for their manufacturing process change for a minor speed bump. This round both companies need to price cards well and get back some of their lost money on this new process and its headaches, yes there have been headaches and the amounts of working cores per wafer are not as good as both companies want them to be. So with the $ rate to £ and this mess these cards are going to be expensive and in short supply for a good while. I think both companies will sell a lot more of the mid range cards this time because the market is demanding that and there is so few games that require the really high end power cards and the consumer is getting smart to this, with the current range of consoles on the market and the games being ported in most cases is not helping to sell the really high end cards and they are not needed for ported games any mid range card will play the games on a single screen at HD quality at a good frame rate and quality that the customer wants. When the next gen consoles come out, things will look very different.

Lets see, I hope they prove me wrong I am looking forward to a single GPU card with GTX 590 performance levels, i'm not into SLI or crossfire I think they add more headaches then they are worth, I prefer stabilty over power that is not always there in all games or worse cause the games to work worse then they run on a single card. I hate noisy systems and SLI and CFX is a noisy system that runs hot and power hungry too, something I try to avoid at all costs now after owning noisy systems in the past.

I don't ever see the GTX 580's coming down anymore then they are now, they will sell out before they even have to reduce them more, the demand is there and they are great cards and especially the ones with custom coolers and custom power circuitry.

supposedly new architecture?

Yes and new memory, this is why im interested in seeing what this will really bring to graphics cards. After Bulldozer and all the hype and new architecture blaa blaa they fed us it turned out to be a waste of time for the poor people waiting for it and they were better off selling their AMD kit and going Intel this time round, because a 2500k is a bargain CPU with a lot of power for todays software. I just feel the new 79xx are going to leave that same bitter taste in our mouths when they do come out, but as I said I hope they don't and bring out a cracking card like the 5870 was. I was waiting for SB-E on the new 2011 platform, but after reading about the price of the CPUs and reading tomshardwares review of the top end 6 core, I decided to sell up my Q9650 setup and go 2600k, the SB-E to me was a waste of money for very little performance increase for the massive price difference.

For those that missed it....

I agree, like when the 580 was released the 480's didnt really drop in price and bare in mind the 480 had a lot of bad press with the heat and noise issues.

PMSL quality

580s are great cards. If you have the money get one, if you want to wait for the next gen, then do so, personally ill be keeping my 580s for some time yet :D

Thanks for the advice everyone, being that I've got my PS3 for now, i think I'll wait till January and see what the new gen of GPU's bring to the table.

Seems silly to be spending £300 upwards if new cards are just around the corner, I'd assumed they were coming Q2-ish next year!

Although if I find a good deal then I'll be all over the 580 :D
