Official 'John Carter' Movie thread

I thought it was brilliant. One of the best films ive seen for a while. Kept me gripped the whole way through and love seeing how most modern sci fi used it in their stories.

Great to see a positive review on here :)

It definitely seems to be a marmite style film. For anyone that's thinking of seeing it definitely go in 2D. Most people I've talked to have found the 3D good but distracting from the story which can only lead to a more confusing time trying to understand it.
 
I saw this for the second time last night and I can honestly say I enjoyed the movie far more the second time round. Not sure why this is but I think it's because there are quite subtle things happening in the plot which can be quite difficult to spot first time round.

Also I saw it at the IMAX and it was a totally different experience to when I saw it at the crew screening a few weeks ago. The stereo (and I am really not a fan of stereo at all) was actually pretty darn good when sat 1/4 of the way away from an IMAX projection. I worked on the movie and even during the developmental stages of the stereo conversion it was really hard to imagine how it would look on a screen of that size but I must say I was pleased with the result.
 
I saw it last week, and whilst on the whole I thought it was good, there were a few moments when it felt like it had been dumbed down to try to turn it into an action blockbuster.

The stupidest moment being the escape from the river, when some random army turns up and John Carter takes them all on single handedly. Far too over the top just to show off some mass CGI violence!

It has made me want to read the books though!
 
Seen it twice now on IMAX, really enjoyed it and i'm slightly puzzled by all the negative stuff about it. Sure its not up there with Dark Knight or the LOTR trilogy but its certainly worth a watch.
 
I saw the trailers quite a while back and wasn't particularly interested in seeing it. But went yesterday afternoon(it was that or the marigold hotel flick) with the Wife & we both enjoyed it. It was surprisingly good, could have been shortened a bit. Hell of a lot better than the Phantom Menace. Definitely going to try the books. Was very surprised to see it losing so much, didn't think it was THAT bad.

I saw it in 3D at local cinema and it did add some noticeable depth to the scenes. But my personal preference is that 3D is only really worth it on IMAX.

That scene looked awesome but possible a bit OTT alright :D

I would watch it in 2D unless you get to see it in IMAX. Good to see people aren't being put off by the hideous trailers. If you want some good trailers you have to resort to fan made ones as Disney marketed this film to be a flop from the start. Basically the management team at Disney that greenlighted the film all left or were fired a year ago. Since then the new management team ( the same one that's behind high school musical etc ) have had no interest in even attempting to make JCOM a success.

Here are the two fan trailers that really show the film off well, basically ignore all other trailers as they are steaming piles of poop:



 
Looks more like the epic space fiction story books of the past. We are probably used to less story nowadays. John Carter sucks as a title though.

That's exactly what it is, it is arguably the first 'modern' sci-fi story.

Sadly true, there are areas where JCOM could have improved it's story, I felt the river Iss sequence was all a little tacked on with little need for it. Overall though I think they adapted the books well and lead up to a fantastic sequel (if it gets made now).

If a sequel gets made it will be based on the The Gods of Mars book which will lead to a better title I hope. It better not just be John Carter 2!
