Watercooling an i7 3770k With No IHS - Direct Die cooling

Yes, it's confusing at first with the naked-mount kit. :P

Honestly - the loop is shoddy at the moment but I'll show you pics anyway, it was just one of those "omg I have enough money to buy it, lets just get it done". Once I have a bit more money I'll buy more tubing and tidy it up, get a UV light etc. Cable management really needs re-doing too but I'm hoping to go up to the 780s and stick waterblocks on them, once that happens I'll tidy the cables up.

I want to move to stand the rad up at the front and get 2 more fans for push pull, and move the res and pump to the right middle. It's a mess but it works very well :P

Good pics Illuz, I know what you mean about just sticking it all together to get it working. I stripped mine out recently to re do the not so tidy install. I've still not finished it but will post a few pics later.

been meaning to do this myself might have a crack this weekend my chip is already delidded

What tim are you using to make the contact between the dye and the cooler?

Liquid metal yeah. After watching temps and messing around it barely gets into 60s most games, hovers between mid 40s mid 50s. Very happy with it for volts and speed I'm using!

420mm rad at the top and 280mm rad at the bottom.

Up and running but there are a few more things to do before it's finished lol.

Bit off topic guys, but is it possible to use a direct die mounting kit with an air cooler? Switching to a 4770k next week and im considering delidding it.

Mechanically it'll be fine. I've been bolting heatsinks down watercooling-style since I first saw a water block. M4 screws from behind the board with a nut & washer on the other side to hold them in place, slide the heatsink bracket down over the screws, another four nuts and you're done. Should use springs really but I never seem to find any.

Some risk of cracking the die if there's no supporting material left around it, but about the same risk with a waterblock. I'd be tempted too.

Couldve sworn i seen an alternative to the ek system on here, cant remember what thread though.

Historically that was always done before heatspreaders on processors became the norm. A small risk of cracking the corner from the die but if all bolts are tightened incrementally it should be fine.

If my 8350 heatspreader was not soldered, I would have gone this way.
