Firestrike Extreme Bench.

This is going to end up on Videocardz and wccftech. :D

Is this on the new or old drivers Gibbo?

Also do the new drivers improve scores for other non 290 GCN cards?

Answer these questions or i will hunt you down! :p

New - 13.11 Beta 8
Only tested on 290 Pro and 290X, improvements on both in everything.

Card was MK26 cooled, to get 1220 core and 6400MHz RAM.

MK26 cools core better, but VRM and RAM not as good as stock cooler.

Stock cooler managed 1200/6600 for reference.

Good info thanks mate.

13.11 Beta 8 is already out though. I thought AMD were releasing a new driver for these cards especially? I take it 13.11 beta 8 has the improvements in for the 290 cards then?

Yes, Beta 8 is the fast driver, seems to improve benchmark scores by around 5%, 20% more performance in crossfire setups and upto 40% boost in some games.

Bear in mind I ran on Windows 7 too, supposedly Windows 8.1 improves firestrike scores, just simply not had the time to do more testing. :(

Yep Windows 8 definitely adds a bit in firestrike. Good info cheers.

Was the run done on an Asus 290 with GPU tweak.

The 6-8 core chips from Intel score much higher due to more cores.

Gibbo that Physics score is very low for 5ghz, i score 13100 @4.6.

I've encountered an issue while using my 290X and my 4770k.

The issue seems to stem from the gpu lowering it's clocks when idle.

EG, i leave the card at stock without touching any settings in afterburner like extend official overclocking limits, disable Ulps, so both these settings aren't checked, my Physics score on both firestrike and 3dmark 11 drop by over a thousand points, as much as 2 thousand sometimes.

The only fixed I've found is to check both Extend Official overclocking limits and disable Ulps, thus stopping the card from lowering it's clocks when idle.

This results in my Physics score being as it should in both benchmarks.

Don't ask me how a GPU can effect a CPU test because i really haven't got a clue, but over the last few days i've tested and tested, the results are replicable using the method i've spoke about in afterburner.

Would be great if you could test it too though.

Yes disabling UPS gives a big boost for AMD cards, but I did not have after burner to hand or certainly a version which works. So could not disable it in my test, so yes bigger scores are possible again with AMD.

Can you post a link to the after burner your using with your 290 please and if I get time in the morning I'll have one last go. :)

But why would disabling Ulps effect my cpu score?

How can a gpu's clock frequency have such a dramatic effect on a solely CPU test..

I thought disabling ulps was a something for crossfire systems, i'm only using a single 290X

To clarify, what i'm saying is disabling ulps and checking Extend official overclocking limits, has no effect on my gpu scores those are fine and have always have been, it's my cpu scores that is getting effect by these settings.

Look at this paying close attention to the cpu scores.

This is 9th place in the single gpu results: 9. 5705. GFX Score 5908. 780. Water Cooled. Physics Score 14479. CPU 4770k @ 5.1 Water Cooled - Doug2507 -

And then yours: 13. 5639. GFX Score 5968. 290P. Air Cooled. Physics Score 12843. CPU 4770k @ 5.0 Water Cooled - Gibbo -

Your gpu score is in-line with what i would expect, but your cpu score is falling way behind and what i think is happening is the same issue i've been having as explained above.

Give it ago tomorrow.

Check both disable Ulps and extend offical overclocking limits, set your core clock to 1100mhz and the memory to 1400 if possible to match mine, checking in aftertburner after restarting the system that the clocks are not lowering when idle but are staying at 1100/1400, run firestrike and check your cpu score.

Haha greg's not going to be happy seeing his water cooled titan get bested by a 290 on the reference cooler. :D

EDIT

Oops it was using the MK-26.

Well in fairness, my run was on normal volts for this bench and I never pushed it that hard but I take nothing away from that 290 kicking my score. Fantastic card and I bet a fantastic price.

I look forward to many more 290's and 290X's beating my score. :)

HI there

Disabled ULPS, got the office to freezing levels and re-ran at 1240/6400 :D
