It's fine if you're ok with 45-60FPS, Not so much if you're a fan of screaming high FPS though.

Hmm well 45-60 looks too low to me, 60-80 is good and 80-100 is great. 3440x1440 with 60-100fps is better than 4k with 40-60fps I think, although I am sure a 55" 4k OLED would look amazing if you could get a solid 60fps.

Hi

Anyone using a GTX 1080 with a system similar to mine in my sig, am looking to upgrade as my GTX 580 is a bit old now, nothing really wrong with it except lack of Vram(damm u Skyrim mods lol) and am starting to have to lower settings to keep frame rate smooth in newer games.

Yes I know 1080 its overkill for 1080P gaming but am also planning on doing full system upgrade(except GPU) later in the year and will possibly get upgraded monitor too.

Looking at either the Strix 1070 or 1080, my 580 has lasted me 5 years now so has done very well.

Thanks

grab the 1070, also might be worth grabbing a cheap 12 core to overclock if you decide to stay on 1366

any idea why GPU-Z shows my G1 1080 specs as 658 mhz

also will running this card on a pcix8 slot throttle it compared to a x16 slot as i cant fit it on my MB's x16 slot

Was it a realtime reading as in 658 was all that it was using at the time?

I use one in an x8 slot and I am within less than 1% of the best benchmarks on this forum so I don't think it's a problem. User skill at oc and silicon lottery are much bigger factors. if using in SLI it becomes a bigger gap however.

cheers that - noticed that when running the GPUZ stress test the reatime reading is over 1900 mhz so seems fine

Has anyone tried installing an Artic Accelero Xtreme iv on the 1080, or another after-market cooler?

I have an MSI GTX 1080 Aero OC arriving tomorrow and am concerned heat/temps is not going to be at comfortable levels (wanted a blower-style cooler since my case is set up entirely for front-back airflow w/o a side vent).

How much of a bottleneck would a 2500k @ 3.8Ghz be for a 1070/80?

Debating whether to just upgrade my whole PC or just the 970 at this stage..

Outside of a few CPU-bound games, as long as you're playing at 1440p with high IQ, you'll be fine. And in those games that aren't demanding enough, your FPS will likely be high enough already that it won't matter.

Looks like Mirror's edge catalyst is a good game to test core overclocks. I had mine running at +210 stable on heaven and then on this game after a while i started getting red blotches flash on and off. Had to drop the core to +170 to completely eliminate them on the founders edition.

If you overclock the cpu up to 4.4 - 4.6ghz and get some 2133mhz ram you will get a lot more fps in cpu heavy games and it will ensure that you don't get dips under 60fps or more fps on a high hz monitor. Their is a Digital foundry article showing the huge gains to be had.

Just Cause 3 is another game that will show up a bad overclock in record time in my experience. Artifacts everywhere within two minutes on an overclock that was rock solid in every other benchmark and game I threw at it. :o

How are people finding their overclocks on these cards from a noise perspective?

I have the Inno3d 2x and seems to be a good one as with barely any fiddling its boosting at up to 2.1 and 550 memory. However the fan ramps up quite a lot and it's pretty loud. Are they all like this or are the better cards a lot quieter?

If you're after high, constant FPS, then the 1080 isn't an overkill. It also allows an upgrade for the monitor as you said, or even VR.

Surprised at how quiet this is when overclocked. With 2ghz on GPU and 5100mhz on Memory fan stays about 55%. Toasty 81c though. Will the 980ti EVGA Hybrid cooler fit hmmmmmmmm.

Few simple benchmark comparisons

3DMark 11 Extreme

980ti (1511mhz) OC - X8581
1080 (2012mhz) OC - X10279

980ti Stock - X7629
1080 Stock - X9691

3DMark Firestrike Ultra

980ti (1511mhz) OC - 4036
1080 (2012mhz) OC - 5420

980ti Stock - 4545
1080 Stock - 5041

3DMARK Performance

980 OC SLI - P23777
970 OC SLI - P17762
1080 OC - P21411
