x1600XT vs 6800XT

Hi there

The X1600 XT really is not such a great card, it scores well in synthetic benchmarks due to its clock speeds and the only game it really performs well in is Half Life 2, apart from that its performance in most games is poor and for the performance it provides it is certainly overpriced.

In order of performance, 1 been the highest this is how cards rate in that price region:-

1. Gainward BLISS GeForce 6800 GS "Goes Like Hell" 512MB GDDR3 - Retail (GX-027-GW) £155 +VAT
2. PowerColor ATI Radeon X850 XT 256MB GDDR3 - Retail (GX-037-PC) £130 +VAT
3. XFX GeForce 6800 GS Extreme XXX Edition 256MB GDDR3 - Retail (GX-056-XF) £125 +VAT
4. OcUK GeForce 6800 GS 256MB GDDR3 - Retail (GX-034-OK) £115 +VAT
5. PowerColor ATI Radeon X800 GTO16 256MB GDDR3 - Retail (GX-055-PC) £105 +VAT
6. Sapphire ATI Radeon X800 GTO² 256MB DDR3 - Retail (GX-101-SP) £110 +VAT
7. HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon X800 GTO ICEQII TURBO 256MB GDDR3 - Retail (GX-044-HT) £90 +VAT
8. XFX GeForce 6800 XT Extreme Edition 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI - Retail (GX-067-XF) £85 +VAT ***Modable for more performance***
9. Leadtek WinFast PCX6600GT-TDH GeForce PCX6600 GT 128MB DDR3 - Retail (GX-045-LT) £75 +VAT
10. HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon X1600 XT ICEQ Turbo 256MB DDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI - Retail (GX-051-HT) - £110 +VAT

Here is a review to further back up my information which shows that even the 6600 GT gives the X1600 XT a bashing in some games:-

The X1600 XT is not a good buy, you can get cards that will run circles round it for less money, for an example the HIS X800 GTO Turbo is a superb buy from OcUK at just £90 +VAT and you won't find it cheaper anywhere else. Then you have the GTO16 and GTO2 cards which again kick the X1600's ass and only cost the same money. Even the much cheaper priced 6600 GT and 6800 XT outperform the X1600 XT in some games and the 6800 XT is a superb buy and is moddable upto more pipelines and vertex shaders making it a bargain. Then if you spend upto £10 more you can get a 6800 GS which completely destroys the X1600 XT and a little more money will get you the XFX XXX Edition again OcUK are the cheapest for this at just £125 +VAT making us approx £20 cheaper than our competitors. Or get you wallet out and go for the 6800 GS 512MB BLISS from Gainward which offers performance around that of a 6800 Ultra but at a bargain price. :)

OcUK's pricing on VGA at the moment is pretty much unbeatable, there are lots of good buys to be had. :D

yea i m tempted towards x1600xt as well, as i play css more than bf2 and i think creators of hl2 uses ati cards.

Don't do it !!!!!!!

If you want ATI, get an HIS X800 GTO for £90 +VAT from OcUK it completely destroys the X1600 XT at everything or for the same money or get a GTO16 or GTO2 which make X1600 XT's look very slow.

Anybody who buys an X1600 is throwing their money away, please don't waste your hard earned on such a crap card. X800's and 6800's are far better buys!! :)

ATI will be replacing the X1600Xt with a X1700XT at some point since they no the X1600 isn't much of a perfomer.

just like they replaced x600 with x700?

Pretty much so, you'd think they would learn from their mistakes would you not?

If the X1600 XT had a 256-bit memory interface it would make a big difference and thats no doubt what the X1700 XT will have.....

How important is SM3.0? I heard the Powercolor x850xt doesnt have it...does that really matter? Do the 6800GS's have it? It's really hard choosing a mid range card.

I have my eye on these:

1. PowerColor ATI Radeon X850 XT 256MB GDDR3 - Retail (GX-037-PC) £130 +VAT
2. XFX GeForce 6800 GS Extreme XXX Edition 256MB GDDR3 - Retail (GX-056-XF) £125 +VAT

Can't decide. Help!

ok found this one for 99 pounds including VAT, an albartron 6800 128mb

http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/video/nv41-3.html

will this be better it has 12 pipelines and if i overclock it a little i mite be able to get decent performance out of it :D

Its not a bad buy but its clock speeds of very low and its has slow memory.

As 6800 XT would perform similar due to its higher clock speeds and cost the same....

However for £5 more you can have an HIS X800 GTO 256MB ICEQ Turbo which is a lot quicker than both of those cards and is superb value for money, I'd get the X800 GTO from HIS, it wins hands down unless you can stretch too a GTO16 or 6800GS.....Oh in case your wondering the HIS X800 GTO TURBO is on OcUK's This Week Only deal page....

well tbh i dont really wanna go for any card without sm3 .... so i think i mite go for 6800XT or 6800. but, generally speaking, how far can u overclock a gfx card and how much performance can you gain??

(and do ocuk sell any normal 6800? bcoz i really want to buy from you guys :D)

and Explicit, SM3 is for lighting, like in hl2 lost coast , it really does look amazing, none of the ATI cards have it except the x1000 series, the 6800GS does support SM3.

In that case save the extra for the 6800 GS.....

6800 XT and 6800 perform more or less identical. The 6800 won't clock so well due to the slower onboard memory. There is rumours the 6800 XT unlocks to 12 pipelines and more vertex shader which would make it pretty quick, but thats a gamble and is not guaranteed.

Just save for the 6800 GS, they are amazing value and very quick. :)

Ah, thanks for that! I think I will just save up another £30 and go for the Goes Like Hell 6800GS edition. You reckon these will still be around in 2 weeks when its pay day? Heard they're limited edition.
