Out the FA Cup, languishing in the bottom half of the Premiership.

I'll be blunt, I'm pleased. He turned us (Man Utd) down and I was very disappointed, we'd have cleaned up. Coupled with the fact I think he's been the biggest whinging cheat in the history of the Premiership I don't particularly mind he's ended up with nothing at Newcastle.

There's no doubt he's been an absolute fantastic player, but there's even less doubt that he's underachieved. Shoe on the other foot, he'd have broken every scoring record there was with our late 90s team, won the European Cup, maybe several times, and won Euro/World player awards I'm sure. Does he regret this?

Saying that he's absolutely idolised up here, he's done nothing for 2 seasons apart from score a cracker against Everton and they still love him. Part of that has to be the decision he made to come up here, when really he could have picked any club in Europe.

That said, If I was placed in the same situation, say Chelsea and Man Utd were in for me presently, I go to the weaker side that I love, I've no doubt. So fair play to him, he made a big decision, but hindsight would have been nice ;)

i couldnt be happier :D

no doubt he will regret it, but plaing for the club you supported as a kid must be awesome. plus he has the god like status, and im sure his bank account keeps him warm at night :p

I disagree, he seems quietly determined and driven. Footballers want to win things, even more so players of his quality and mindset. For a player of his stature to win what he has is quite shocking really. Batitstuta is another.

I read something the other week when Shearer was asked if he regreted
joining Newcastle over MU

He said i may not have acheived much but i had an opportunity to go and
play for the club i had always supported and my home town club

Now i dont know anyone that would turn that down, so fair play to him
he didnt win nowt but bursting the net in front of your home town crowd
and being idolised like his has been cant be too bad

Im not bitter at all about him not going to MU its his loss, but as already
mentioned i would turn down all the cups/championships in the world
to score at the Stretford End against Liverpool

he could keep playing on if he wanted tho and he doesnt seem to want to. look at teddy hes nearly 40 and still plays in the premier league. shearer is easily good enough and fit enough to do another year, maybe with a new manager newcastle could win summit next year (god forbid)

I doubt he regrets it - he would have had 2 maybe 3 seasons at Old Trafford, scored a hat full of goals, picked up a few trophies then be kicked out on his **** by Taggert

I'm sure neither party regrets the decision really. He got to do what loads of people can only dream of. We won the treble. No real losers in that.

On the flip side I just don't like the guy, something about him just annoys me.

this thread sounds to me like a bitter post. he didn't pick your team get over it.

sure he aint won anything which isn't that great but considering he played for his home team who have the best fans in the premiership playing every week and full of heart i dont think he minds to much.

wonder who you support :p

As a Hero of mine I think it's a shame that Shearer never saw his home club win anything (as Im a Magpie I can feel his pain). He's not just a legend in the North East but even in the darkest depths of Cornwall :D

Lets not forget that he could still win silverware with the club, just not as a player.

I understand there are some bitter feelings with the Man U lot but to say that it makes you happy that he didn't win anything is IMO shallow.

I can't seem him ever regretting the decision silverware or no.

He joined Newcastle at their 90's peak on a record transfer and monumental wages, he has got all he could possibly wish for, and thats being made a very, VERY rich man who gets picked every weekend no matter how badly he plays, or how old he is.

So he has not won anything, or come close to winning anything, I am sure the massive bank balance and huge house a consolation enough.

Shearer could have gone anywhere, even after he joined Newcastle. He could have done 2 seasons and went abroad, Man United or most other clubs.

He didn't, he stayed out of loyalty and knowing that winning silverware was an uncertainty. I personally admire him for it and I speak for all other Newcastle fans as well. Loyalty is a rarity these days.

Speaking personally, I really don't see the fascination with silverware and Newcastle. Under Keegan I went and watched entertaining football every week and that is what I pay for, the silverware if it comes is a bonus. It seems to be fashionable for a dig at the Town with trophies when there are loads of other clubs bereft of it.

I thank Alan Shearer for his ten years as a player with the club and his goalscoring record is there for all to see. It's a shame I couldn't say thanks at his testimonial on May 11th as I am playing a gig but I would have been there if I could.

Love him, hate him, whinge, no whinge, there is not a club in the world who wouldn't want a prime Alan Shearer in their side.

Not much more to say that hasnt been said above.

He signed for us for £15m which not only seems cheap now but has been tremendous value for money.
He was , without doubt the greatest centre forward of his generation and the last of a dying breed.
It has been a great pleasure , no , honour to see him play and score 200 goals for the club that I love and captain England in the process.

He wears the shirt with pride and truely is one of us.
If he wasnt a player he would be in the Gallowgate cheering on the lads and that , to me , is special.

All this talk of greed and huge wages is pap as well , he would have got that money anywhere else.
Dont kid yourself that Man Utd , Juventus , Barca or Real wouldnt have stumpted up the cash to sign a player of his quailty.

He picked Newcastle because we are his team and he idolised Keegan as a kid.
So he didnt win anything? He tried , he failed , thats life.

His loyalty has never been questioned , he has never given up , hid behind excuses or shirked responsibilities.
Two years after he signed Newcastles progress was shifted into reverse faster than under Souness and we spent a year hovering above the relegation zone.
Alan Shearer stuck with NUFC.
One year later things didnt improve under spiders heed , he purposely left him out of the side and alienated his best mate Rob Lee.
Alan Shearer stuck with NUFC.

Only Bull and Le Tiss can match that kind of loyalty.

He has led Newcastle United and dragged us through situations that others could not as well as averaging 20 goals per season despite two horrific injuries that would end careers of lesser men.

It would have been so easy for him to duck out and sign for a club to win things as easy as it is for supporters to follow a club that wins things.

Has Alan Shearer let Newcastle United down?

Has he ****.

Newcastle United have let Alan Shearer down.

Good post Vandle, I agree with everything you've said. Speaking as a Man Utd fan, I don't have a grudge against him because I would have done the same in his boots. 'What if' scenarios will always be there whenever he is mentioned, and when he's remembered after his playing days. I'm sure he has no regrets even if some football fans do. Saying that I don't like him personally, probably the same way people don't like Roy Keane. Funnily enough both of them hated each other as well. :D

Legend and a true great.

I have nothing but prasie for the guy.

He may have turned us down twice in his career but so what ? he made the decision to go to his hometown club and TBh no matter how many trophies he could have won with us, all of them probably wouldnt compare to winning one for Newcastle.
