ok, i'm about to start a website for someone but one of the stipulations is that it can handle electronic payments via credit cards etc. except that is one thing i've never even looked into...

so, to take payments over tinternet... what is involved?

Off the shelf services such as Worldpay, Paypal and Nochex will allow you to simply set up an HTML form to POST some variables to a page on their server where the user can complete payment.

If it is a serious venture, however, I would suggest the client speaks to their bank about setting up a proper internet merchant account. You can then use their payment gateway or a 3rd party capturer such as Protx.com, secpay.com or securetrading.co.uk. Often, in these cases, you will not need to send the user off-site to take their card details.

HTH :)

yeh, use an OLA reseller like worldpay or something. accepting payment cards yourself if for the big boys - I used to write and consult on EFT/OLA software (worldpay is one of our resellers) and the whole affair is not for the faint-hearted! it'd cost you about a grand a day plus expenses to have somebody like me help you set it up :-)
