SLI my 7600GT, or upgrade?

I'm running a Leadtek 7600GT, which is happily overclocked but still chugging a bit with higher res gaming... I can push it a little harder without artifacts in ATItest, but it gets unstable in Oblivion without showing any real gains, so I think it's found its level.

I don't expect to be a fast Vista switcher so I'm not holding off for DirectX 10, just wondered what makes more sense- £100 for another 7600GT to run in SLI with the one I have, or flog it (still got the box and manuals) and get something a bit better? I wouldn't want to spend a huge amount at this point, maybe £200 plus whatever the 7600 would fetch... The less the better, mind ;) Anything leftover from the graphics card budget could probably go on another gb of ram...

The rest of the system is a Pentium D 2.8 with 1.5gb ram... All thoroughly kneecapped by a Dell motherboard which is going to be shown the door, or rather the bin, at the same time.

Hi mate, welcome to the forums.

Sell your current gfx card and get a 7900 or ATI equivalent, depending on your requirements. Just one of these cards will knock the socks of the SLI setup your considering.

You wont regret it. Will do the job just fine until DX10 is standard, more affordable and there are clear benefits / reasons for getting a DX10 card.

Nice one, that's been my thinking too. Thanks for the welcome too- I've been on here for half a year but I keep on forgetting my password so I'm not a frequent poster ;)

A 2.8ghz p4 will be a bottleneck for two 7600s in sli.

When you upgrade get a 6300 a DS3 and an x1800xt or 7900 gt

sell the dell and pocket the difference.

You don't need to upgrade the whole system, you will still be able to appreciate the difference when you buy your new gfx card! However, if you have the money, the setup easyrider suggested would be a fantastic upgrade from your existing rig :)

Remember your password more often! Nice to see new members around.

Yep, that's the plan... Well, tbh I'll probably keep the 2.8 for the moment and just see what happens when I turn it up, first... But that means a new board, which means a new case and PSU, and new CPU cooler  Still, it was a good buy at the time.

Gah. Too much graphics card choice  But that's for another thread. Thanks a lot folks!

Hi,

Keep that 7600GT, if I were you spend the money on:

-New case
-New mobo

And then OC your Pentium D you should achive (depending on your mobo) about 3.4, all these upgrades would be better than a SLi 7600GT :)

If you got an E6300 you'd need a new motherboard, but the memory could stay.

As for graphics, I think you should flog your 7600GT and buy an X1800XT 256MB and get that Pentium D clocked. 3.2GHz *should* be attainable. But your motherboard is shocking so I wouldn't hold out high hopes.

I'd think about spending your hard earned cash on an E6300, new motherboard, PSU, cooler etc. And it will be more in the end.. But will be worth it imo.

No overclocking at all on this board... ****ing thing. And it inexplicably drops the RAM speed when I add the second set- either the 1gb or the 512mb run at 533 seperately, but fit 'em both and it's 400. Again, no manual options at all. Still, the screen's nice, the PC runs resaonably well and it cost pennies, so I can't complain too much.

You've put your finger on it though, I'll be doing all that stuff. Graphics card first, then (all at once) board, PSU, case and coolers, and clock the 2.8D. Maybe different/more RAM at the same time, depends how this lot performs. Then probably some sort of Core 2 processor. But not yet :( Right now it's the graphic's card that's giving me gyp though.
